Your bolt must have gotten to the valve. just a bent valve or the bolt held the valve open and it hit the piston. either condition done run this engine till the head has been removed and the head takent to a machine shop and checked . when the head is off check the piston tops look for damage and check cylinder walls. if you continue to use this engine it will destroy its self.

If it made it to any valve, it may have bent the valve shaft but it is more likely that a rod bearing is announcing its retirement.
A bent valve shaft would put that cylinder out of business and you would have a pronounced miss.

From your description of the knocking, mileage, and oil crusted on the intake valves you need an engine or a complete rebuild of the original.

The tensioner puller bolt broke while the car was running so we put it back together lined marks up but do we need to get the cam and crank in top dead center..just lining the mark up wont let the car...

Its not gonna start because you have bent valves (usually just the intake valves).
Your gonna have to pull the head and have the valves replaced

How do i remove the started of my 1997 chevy silverado

The 5.0 and the 5.7 are about the same take the toque converter cover off the battery cable then the two up pointing bolts that hold it to the block, some 5.7's have a brace on the wire end of the starter. theres a Knock senser right ahead of the starter towards the front and it's an expensive mistake to break it off with the heavy starter and they break easy and cost alot. If you remove the Knock senser rember that hteirs colant behine it and it'll let all the coolant out ( all of it raditor engine and all) the 4.3 's about the same expct theirs aways a brace and the Knock senser is somewhere else. The starter is on the passenger side. the desiel is a whole nther animal and the ctarter is on the driver side and there's two batteries to disconnect first/ the bolts holding it on and 10MM 12 point headed bolts and their are three of them. Theyer real tight and the one thats next to the top near the block xan onbe gotton with a closed end wrench, I got snap=on wrenchs and cheap wrenches are'nt up to this job, the starter is heavy and you want to take out the easiest bolt last, so it can hold the dtarter for you as you get the hard ones out. Lower the starter to the ground with the remove battery cables and put them on the new starter and pull the starter into place with the cables. ut in the easy bolt and don' tighten it all the way till you get all the bolts started by jiggling the starter with the cables as the top bolt is hard to start and even harder to turn by hand use a 1/4 in drive 12 point socket with a wobble extion on it as you can't tighten it up tight enough with this rig but you'll get the bolt in. They got to be bust a knulckel tight or they'll fall out sooner that you think, Hit the wrench with an extion and a hammer, then do em all again/

Check vacuum lines in area of master cylinder as well as fluid level. As far as valves rattling, are referring to engine knock upon acceleration? Have knock sensor checked and/or replaced.

Engine code suggests Knock sensor is bad...but where is it at?

knock sensor is on the block, easy to do. not sure exactly where it is on your specific car but it looks like a fat bolt with 2 wires running out of it. but also check the wiring if its good for the knock sensor
