Loucobie, what transmission do you have on the 89? Is it the E4OD? I am most familliaar with the E4OD, here is a bit of info that may help you, the previous comment was correct but a small amount of overfill should not be harmfull. Does your transmission hgave an electric connection on the side like mine? If so separtate the two conectors and check for water intrusion, if you have an electric controlled transmission like mine then that moisture can make it act very strange, I sprayed my connector's with some brake cleaner or somethig like that wait for that to evaporate and the moisture should be gone , when I did this my transmission went back to normal.

That is almost as much fluid as they normally have in them so I would definitely say it was low. Attempting to drive a vehicle with the fluid level that low could cause damage to internal components.
You also need to make sure that you didn't overfill it. Most automatic transmissions are checked with the engine running and at operating temperature.
1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and block the wheels.
2. Start the engine and let it reach operating temperature. (upper radiator hose hot)
3. Pull the dip stick out and wipe it off.
4. Reinsert the stick and then remove it again.
The fluid level should be at the "full" mark on the stick. If it is lower, then carefully add fluid (a little at a time) until it is full. If it is above the full mark, then the fluid must be removed until it is corrected.
Disconnect a transmission line (usually the lower one) and position a drain pan under it. Start the engine and let some of the fluid go into the pan. Reconnect the line and recheck the fluid using the above procedure. Repeat this process until the fluid level is correct. If this does not correct the problem, then internal damage is indicated and transmission service is required. I hope this information is helpful. Thank you for using Fixya.com. If a different procedure for checking the fluid is required, then it will usually say so on the dip stick.

Transmission slip

Dirty or low transmission fluid/filter can cause this. You can try adding a bottle of Lucas Oil Transmission stabilizer, you do not have to drain or replace anything else...Please read the full instructions on the bottle...about $12.

Coming home jimmy slowed down by itself to a stop. engine runs but it wont move in any gear

Did you look underneath for leaks ,check the dipstick?
Sounds like you are completely out of transmission fluid which does not sound good .
Adding SeaFoam probably didn't help either if it was already low or leaking ,never trust those supposed bottled leak sealers !
Hopefully you didn't drive it too far ,if you haven't I would have it towed home and fill it up with tranny fluid a quart at a time ,check it after the second bottle on the dipstick and after every one after until you see any improvement (all the while looking for leaks underneath !! ) Hopefully you haven't burned up your transmission.

Transmission slips after engine warms up

It isn't when the engine gets hot, it is when the transmission fluid gets hot that the slipping starts, due to wear of the clutches and gears inside the transmission.
First, check the fluid level to make sure it is full. If it is low, bring fluid level to full and see if that helps.
About all the owner can do with slipping automatics is trying a transmission fluid and filter change to see if transmission revives and stops slipping. The bottom pan is removed, fluid (about 6-8 quarts) is drained, and a new filter is installed before the pan is replaced with a new gasket, sealed up, and fresh fluid added. Sometimes it helps. Sometimes the transmission is worn too bad to help, and you are left with looking for a replacement transmission.
Check the fluid level first. Good luck.

Jeep stopped, transmission fluid is very low. Could that be the reason it stopped ?

Though most transmissions hold about ten quarts of fluid, the last quart and a half are very critical.
At about one quart low you'd begin to get slipping or disengagement on turns and below that most often the vehicle won't move or will slip severely. Always check fluid level with the engine at operating temp, running, trans in park, vehicle on a flat level surface.
Check and add using dexron III/ mercon fluid and look underneath and check to see where it's leaking
After repairing the leak (if it's a line etc) top off using lucas sealer and conditioner.(that will help if you glazed any internal clutches and will also help with any minor external seal leaks)
If you find a large leak, I suggest you bring it to a shop and have that repaired.
The amount of fluid loss and the length of time you drove it that way will determine how much internal damage was done. In most cases, what I said will get you back on the road but if you did major damage, the only solution is a replacement or rebuild.
Good luck!!

My jeep was shifting wrong and slipping , i took it to aamco, and they said i needed a leaking case connector, plus they said it was down about 2 qts of fluid , but after i got it back the transmission...

Being two quarts low in an automatic transmission is very low and can cause overheating of the internal clutch packs. If that happens they begin to flake and the debris from there can contaminate seals and internal valving, resulting in further problems. If they repaired the case seal and re-filled the unit and there still is a problem, chances are you have internal damage that requires a rebuild.
Sometimes, adding a quality product such as lucas transmission conditioner can help to restore normal operation but nothing short of a rebuild will actually fix it. If you were to scan the computer likely you would see a code for "improper gear ratio" that indicates internal slipping. .

My automatic transmission slips when shifting from

Either the fluid is low or you have a clogged trany filter or are starting to loose your transmition. If it is just low on fliud you will ruin your trany if you keep driving it with this condition.Check your fluid level with the engine running and if it is low fill it to the full line and test drive.
