For the past two months my 2001 is shutting off when I put it in Drive or Reverse from of course the Parked position. I change the gear move my foot to the gas peddle to go and it shuts down. Please help, I have just had the Transmission completely rebuilt, Complete Engine Flush, Total Tune up and this has been put on a mechanics computer twice and nothing found. Just today made an appointment with Chrystler dealership and afraid to pay 95 bucks to hear cannot find anything again. HELP

You should have it checked at a dealer for trouble codes. It could be a bad sensor, but there are several that can cause this. An oxygen sensor is high on the list. Also you do not say how many miles are on the van, but spark plugs or plug wires are possible.

lack of oil to lifters, was a common ford thing back in the 80s, when did you last change the oil? sometimes old oil causes the issue, i had a bronco that would start doing it every 4000 miles unless i changed the oil.. try a thinner oil, 5w30, or 5w20..might fix the problem

Engine stalls

Hi, car stalling problem often means the engine is not getting enough fuel and/or too much air. A cold engine needs a fairly rich fuel mixture to start, and to idle smoothly while it warms up. Any of the following could cause or contribute to this kind of stalling problem which i would not want to exaggerate until i get a clear picture of how the car stalls.

Does your engine stalls when you stop for a traffic light or when idling, or your engine just stalls unexpectedly while driving?
Answering the question will help me determine the cause of the problem.

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

As a first course of action, I strongly suggest that you replace the automatic transmission fluid. If the fluid is burnt, the car hesitates specially on cold start ups. Once replaced, a smooth ride and shifting will be noticeable.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

When warm the car does not idle. when its cold it starts and drives fine. when it warms up it shuts off and idles rough.

Find the egr valve on the intake. Look up on the internet what it looks like because it is difficult to describe. There will be one vacuum hose attached to it. Start the car and let it warm up. when it starts to hesitate remove the hose. If the engine holds idle, you need to replace the egr valve. The egr (EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION) valve allows the engine to re burn the exhaust gas when the engine is cold to clean up the emissions at the tail pipe. They tend to get stuck in one position from carbon build up and need replacement.

1991 dodge colt won't idle when engine is cold.

probably oil, it may be too thick when it's cold but once it warms up it liquefies and your engine runs smoothly. you could try changing oil, I'm guessing if you have a high performance oil the chances this is the problem may be greater since high performance things are usually geared towards working well when everything is hot
