Three ways to loose tranny fluid:

1 Vacuum modulator. Hook up a mityvac (hand vacuum pump) to the vacuum line at the rear of the manifold. if it holds pressure the modulator is good. if it leaks modulator is bad. this is a less expensive repair and fairly easy. Another way to check is to check the number 6 spark plug if it is the only one fouled the VM could be hte issue.

2. Check your engine coolant for oil residue. if the coolant was not changed as required the transmission cooler which is insde of the radiator may have a leak. Trans Fluid in coolant=Replace radiator and flush/clean cooling system.

3. Use a cleaner like simople green to clean teh entire underside of the car then carefully inspect for leaks. rear seals can fail but most often the front seals fail and you will find residue around the bottom of the bell housing.

One would think that a person with the wherewithal to purchase a german car would take it to a german car dealer and get it fixed. the labor and parts expense are part of the german patina. if you know anything about cars, take a look at possible vacuum lines attached to the transmission. on cheap old american cars there was a vacuum activated transmission gear kick-down, and often the membrane in the vacuum link would rupture causing transmission fluid to be sucked through the vacuum line and into the combustion chamber and hence out the exhaust. that is old school design and i am sure german cars discarded it long ago, but put it up on a lift and give the tranny a visual anyhow just in case those germans are laughing at us and driving chevies.

2000 Mazda MPV automatic transmission won't shift into 3rd.

The trouble with automatic transmissions, in cases like these, is that you may not have a choice but to have the transmission removed and disassembled to find the problem. If all that happened was a loss of fluid, it is unlikely something as simple as an external sensor or a linkage problem is going to cause your issues. At the very least, the pans would need to be removed and inspected for large amounts of debris. Even without loud noises, it doesn't take long for internal aluminum parts to wear or break when not properly lubricated.
With the pans removed, you can also inspect (and/ or change) the fluid filter. If there are no large pieces of metal found in either or the pans, there is a small chance you may be able to bring the van back to life. I have had moderate success using Lucas Oil Products in the past and use them quite a bit in my shop.
Keep in mind, this is a gamble and could cost as must as $250 for parts and labor (if you're not doing it yourself).
With the pans removed and no large debris found, remove the filter and let all of the fluid drain for at least 15 minutes. Then use spray parts cleaner to completely removed all dirt and old fluid from all the parts you can see.
Then install a new filter and pans with new gaskets. DO NOT use silicone sealer if the pans call for a gasket. This only breaks down with fluid and plugs filters.
At any parts store, find 2 quart bottles of Lucas Transmission Stop Slip. It's a little costly, but I've seen it bring worn transmissions back from the dead. It is also important to use high-quality, name-brand fluid. Most parts stores carry a store-brand, which is made by the same company that makes Valvoline. I use them every day and have never had a problem.
Add 3 quarts of transmission fluid to begin filling. Start the engine and idle for about a minute. This will begin priming the transmission pump and filling the torque converter. Stop the engine and add the 2 quarts of Lucas additive. The additive is very thick and will drain very slowly in cold temperatures. Keep the bottles inside and warm until you are ready for them. Once they are both completely drained into the transmission, start and idle the van for about 10 minutes to get warm. While idling, apply the brake and shift to reverse, then neutral and then to drive several times. If the transmission does not engage right away, check the fluid and continue to top off with fluid until it is at the full COLD range.
Once the transmission is full and the engine is warm, test drive the vehicle. If this procedure is going to help anything, it should start to take effect within 100 miles. If it doesn't happen right away, don't panic. Just drive the van normally without any sudden acceleration or stopping (hard acceleration can cavitate the pump due to the thick additive) until you start to see a change.
I know this seems like a lot of work just to "try" and keep your van going, but I've done this on multiple vehicles in the past. Again, it is a gamble...but it may just pay off. My shop typically charges around $200 for this service, but a replacement transmission could run in the range of $4000.
Good luck!!

Hi, I've got a 2000 Chrysler Cirrus LXi 2.5L and it's been acting strange lately. When in forward gear, it remains in 2nd gear and will not down/upshift (Park, neutral, reverse works fine). The speedometer...

If your transmission is leaking, that would explain the transmission not wanting to shift into other gears. An automatic transmission works off of pressure and when enough pressure builds up the valve body will switch to another gear. The most common places that a front wheel drive transmission will leak is the axle seals, there are two of them, one for each of the front axles. Another problem area is the transmission pan gasket and the transmission lines. None of which are really a hard fix. Do not drive the car if with the transmission fluid level low as you will damage the transmission and will be looking at one heck of a repair bill. Also, make sure that you use dex/merc transmission fluid that is approved for your cars transmission. There are several different brands and types available and although they are all automatic transmission fluids, there is a significant difference in them.

My Benz 230E 1992 has slow acceleration, epecially when cold. you press the throtle and it takes time to pick. sometimes goes off when cold. Also the automatic gear shift jerks. Please advice

Check the fuel pump pressure ( use correct pressure guage and safety goggles) and make sure the fuel filter is good or replace before you do that.
Pressure should be around four and half to five bar. If that works out ok, borrow an air flow sensor from a friends car (which is running correctly and try it. You may have to replace all three items to get the performance you want. Best of luck

Transmission

If it is an automatic the best thing to use is chrysler automatic trans fluid Most 1998 Ford F150s take Mercon V...also check for leak. The transmission dipstick is located on the passengers side rear. Near the firewall / or back of the engine. The dipstick is color yellow or red. use long funnel.

Leaking fluid

it could be your automatic transmission fliud. normally this fluid is color red. have it checked right away because you may have bigger problems if you ignore it.

you can check your level by running the truck on neutral and check your dip stick on your transmission fluid.
