Question about 2003 GMC Safari

2003 GMC Safari will not start.

I have a 2003 GMC Safari and it's been giving me problems starting. I'd have to try 3 to 5x's before it would even start. Now it wont start at all. It just barely passed smog. I haven't changed my spark plugs in along while, could this be the reason? If it is, will it be hard to change?

It sounds like it wants to but it doesn't. It's a strong, but doesn't get there. I had my fuel pump changed, it's got 1/2 a tank of gas so it's not that and the battery is working. I was wondering if it could be the spark plugs?

  • isin4you Aug 23, 2008

do you think that all of that should work?

  • isin4you Aug 23, 2008

so do you think it could be anything else?

  • isin4you Aug 23, 2008

is it going to hard? I'll have to do it myself and i've never done it before.

My safari starts fine as long as you start it every day. If you do not start it one day it is very difficult to start the next day.

CMV9 im tired of you giving out bad information. a tune up for this van is 4 hours (Motor labor guide) and the labor rate around here is $80 an hour that would be $360 for a tune up with plugs. i would bet to say you have never put plugs in a 4.3 mini van. you have no idea i hope i caught the other bad advice you gave on a navigator spark plug you coul of cost this person $3000 to $4000 for your bad advice. if you dont know what you are talking about tont give advice (Jack of all trades master of NONE)

spark plugs may help. but if you do that also try to replace the cap, rotor and wires as well.

it is a good start. it will let you engine turn faster because the plugs and cap will be getting a good spark.

the spark plugs shouldn't be to hard. most shops would only charg about 19.99 for a tune up and thats basiclly what you are going to be doing.

I have an 1998 gmc safari van, it quit while driving down the road. I had a friend tow it home. we tried starting fluid in the intake. It will turn over fine, but wont start. What could be wrong?

It is the Ignition. If you put starting fluid in it, and it did not start, then you probably have no spark.

Check that you have spark to the spark plugs. If not, then check the vehicles' Ignition System, and repair as neccessary.

Hello and welcome to FixYa!

I strongly suggest that you replace the transmission fluid. If the fluid is burnt the transmission tends to be sluggish and finds it hard to shift gears. This will surely give great stress to the engine. Once the fluid is replaced, smooth drive and shifting will be noticeable.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Once in a while my 2003 gmc safari will not start. i turn the key, here a click but engine will not crank. I wait for a while then starts normally. van has only 35,000 miles. could starter be bad already?

Could be bad starter. Miles don't matter, only how many times you start the car. I would first check for corroded or loose connections between battery and starter solenoid..

My 1997 safari was doing the same. After being shut off for a short period of time it started as if it was flooded. If I put the accelerator to the floor it would fire up. As well, I had no engine codes to report. I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and everything is great. It was leaking fuel into the engine causing it to act flooded when starting. Once started, the computer system made adjustments for the leaking fuel so the engine ran fine. If you turn the van off and immediately try to start it, it should fire up. (don't give it time to leak extra fuel into the engine)
