Question about 2004 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx

Pulling to left

My maxx wants to periodically pull sharp to left as I am going around curves, exit ramps etc. that turn to left. Is this a tie rod issue and if so how can I tell if tie rod is bad?

    I car did the same thing at higher speeds. It ended up being the ball-joint tie rod. When this was replaced the problem no longer occurred.

I would narrow it down to the steering rack or a CV joint
any noise comming from the front end like a clicking sound?

just unbolt it count rounds of taking the end off and screw new one on same amount will get you close on alignment

Cluncking noise from front end when pulling away / braking hard and some times when turning


You didn't say what make or model or year, but This could be so many things. Bad ball joints, bad control arm, bad struts, strut plates, bad CV joint, bad inner tie rod, bad wheel bearing, caliber , sway bar, . Not enough info, but if you put vehicle in the air and pry wheel around looking for anything loose in the steering components, this is the best thing to do, and it will give you a better idea of what's going wrong

I have a 1996 Mazda 626 and have been told I need to replace the tie rods or I will have to replace my tires about every 6 months. When I went on line to try and order the tie rods there were several...


Jack the front of the car up high enough to get under it, put jack stands under the car for safety.

Start on either side and check the tie rod ends for looseness. If you have someone to help, have them hold one tire with hands at 3 and 9 o'clock while you grab the other tire the same way. Try to move the tire by pushing and pulling. If you feel movement, have your helper sit in the car and move the steering wheel 1/4 to 1/2 turn left and righ as you check the tie rods for which one or ones are loose.

Once you have found out which to replace, after they are replaced, you will need to have the car aligned.

Replacing tires every six months is not the worst--Sooner or later a sloppy tie rod let's go. They don't always go out all at once, but sooner or later they all need replaced.

Vibration in steering wheel when a bump or other object in the road is hit


You probably have a worn tie-rod. Jack one side of the car up at a time so that one front wheel is off the ground. Grab the wheel and try to turn it back and forth. You should not feel any play. When you find a wheel with play, reach around the wheel with one hand and grab the inner tie rod and hold it still while pushing and pulling on the wheel. If the play goes away, replace the inner tie rod end. If it does not go away, replace the outer tie rod end.

Steering pulling to the right


Yes your car has outer tie rod ends.The steel on steel noise could be the metal plate behind your brake rotor could have got bent a little and is rubbing on the brake rotor.

the tie rods are curved and the right is different from the left THEY put on the passenger side tie rod on the drivers side i bet

Popping noise


Inner tie rods could make the same noise your describing. Do this......with your car in park and at idle, slightly turn you wheel from left to right, just a slight ****. 1/16 of a turn. Increase the pace from left to right, then slow down the pace. You should feel a bump in the steering wheel almost like something is tapping it. If so, have your inner and outer tie rods checked. Actually, have the steering gear checked also for leaks and wear.

Ball joint, tie rod end or upper strut bearing. CV joints? Pulling to the left may be an alignment problem with front or rear tires. Get a four wheel alignment.
