My timing belt and balancing belt broke on my 1998 mitsubishi galant es and my husband put the belts back on in time but the car won't crank. The engine turns over when cranked but won't start. ...

Are you sure it was timing belt? If so. When you crank the engine, does it turn kinda fast without making a wump wump sound? When the timing belt broke it may have done some hidden damage. Its possible it may have bent the valve stems by piston hitting them because the timing to move them was off. You need to perform a compression test on all cylinders. Borrow or rent a compression gauge from an auto parts store. They will tell you how to use it, what to look for. If compression is bad, you may have to remove the cylinder head and have a valve job done. Except that you need to replace some of the valves. This calls for some skill or at least good apptitude in mechanics. OR somthing did not go right with the timing belt install.. Thats all I can do for you now. Check the compression. Good luck.

1997 nissan sentra- goin down interstate heard a pop then car died, now it has no compression. car will turn over but won't start.

How did you check the compression? A simple and fast way is to remove a spark plug and hold a finger over the hole, with the coil unplugged, and have a helper crank the engine. What has probably happened if you have lost compression is that the timing belt broke resulting in the valves contacting the pistons, in this case the best option for repair would be to find a good used engine (from a reputable salvage yard with a warranty) and do a swap.

My sons 97 Escort died on the highway, had it towed home and when I turn the key it spins fast. I had my wife turn it over and watched where the timing belt is and I see a gear attached on the belt that...

videopix123, There are many reasons for a vehicle dieing at any given time. However, what you discribe here with the engine spinning fast leads me to think that the timing belt is broken. With the engine spinning fast sounds like there is no compression in the cylinders. When the timing belt breaks, a few valves will be left open and compression cannot build up and this will allow the engine to spin fast. You state that you "checked the timing belt by moving the top of cover and it seems fine and new." Do this again and have someone try to start the vehicle. If the belt does not move then it is broken and needs to be replaced. If this is not the case then, with my apologies, please feel free to resubmit your question. Good luck with this.

CAR STALLED. DISCOVERED TIMING BELT HAD BROKEN. REPLACED BELT. STILL WILL NOT START BUT WILL TURN OVER

It sounds like the timing is still off, which will not allow it to start, or you have a faulty cam, or crank sensor.

Is the engine a free spin? 04 sxt mitz engine? Im on the side of the road...i think the timing belt just broke

If the engine spins about twice as fast as normal when trying to start, then very likely, the timing belt has retired for the duration. Best to call for a tow truck as this is not just a routine repair. Hopefully, you don't have an 'interference' type engine that kills the valves when the belt lets go. Good luck!

Timing belt problem

when you broke the belt you most likely broke the magnet for the cam sensor. What you need to do is spin the engine around to TDC and look for a magnet.

Take the sensor out first.

1994 Pathfinder,A/C belt broke;replaced it, but it will not start

A broken A/C belt should not have caused your engine to stall. It is possible that the timing belt failed, I hope not because it will probably need a valve job if it broke under power.
