Question about 2001 Ford Focus
I have a 2002 ford focus and when i switch on the ignition, it makes a clicking sound coming from the left hand side. so i dont know if its the starter or just a fuse. I have already had the water pump and timing belt replaced (which i find is usual with ford...i didnt even need to take it to the mechanic to find out what was wrong that time...i just knew !!). I cant even get the hood open so i can check it out for myself !!
Going on with Leo B's comment, my 2001 focus had the same problem, it was not the clutch pedal though, it it the sensor for it, if your car is a standard, look at the clutch pedal, just behind it, you will see a small plastic plunger. when your clutch is fully pressed in, it will allow you to start your car. however, the pedal often looses the rubber bushing on the back of the pedal to depress the plunger all the way.
my recommendation: press in the plunger all the way with the car in neutral, to keep it from jumping forward when you start it.
press in the plunger by hand (with the emergency brake set and try to start the vehicle.
if it starts, you can go to a parts store or find anything around the garage to be able to press the plunger all the way in...
i went to ford and they told me i would need to replace my clutch pedal which was not something i wanted to do for a piece of rubber that fell off, so i super glued a new rubber bushing on and it works like a champ.
I realize this is not the way to actually fix the problem, but it is way cheaper and pretty easy.
**Note: allow plenty of time for the glue to dry of it will come off again!**

I had the same problem, If the car has a manuel transmission, its a part that went bad, on my focus, its a manuel, and the clutch switch was bad, its a easy part to get to, but when it clicks like that, its the entire clutch switch that needs to be replaced, the part is rather expensive

When I smelled the sulfer in my Focus a while back, I found it to be the MAF sensor.
