Question about 2001 Ford Focus

3 Answers

Car will not start although radio and interior lights come on.

I have a 2002 ford focus and when i switch on the ignition, it makes a clicking sound coming from the left hand side. so i dont know if its the starter or just a fuse. I have already had the water pump and timing belt replaced (which i find is usual with ford...i didnt even need to take it to the mechanic to find out what was wrong that time...i just knew !!). I cant even get the hood open so i can check it out for myself !!

when i try tpo turn on the ignition.. the radio comes on but i hear a clicking sound coming from the left hand side (passenger side) from under the hood. I thought that it could be the alternator, or the starter. i know a trick for checking the starter celluiod.. but im not that familiar with the alternator...although i know enough about cars to figure it out and maybe fix some of it myself. I was afraid that my catalytic convverter was going out on me..because i was smelling a sulfur like smell from my car a couple of times...it was strong but not constant. by the way, my headlight went on me too... but i think its just a bulb needing to be replaced... ive only had the car a lil over a year !!! ford...fix or repair daily !!!

I have a 2002 ford forcus and it will not start. When I turn the key it click and the lights turn on but nothing else. It won't start in the morning but by the afternoon the car started with no problem. I recently changed my spark plugs and changed the hose or spark plug cables.

Going on with Leo B's comment, my 2001 focus had the same problem, it was not the clutch pedal though, it it the sensor for it, if your car is a standard, look at the clutch pedal, just behind it, you will see a small plastic plunger. when your clutch is fully pressed in, it will allow you to start your car. however, the pedal often looses the rubber bushing on the back of the pedal to depress the plunger all the way.

my recommendation: press in the plunger all the way with the car in neutral, to keep it from jumping forward when you start it.

press in the plunger by hand (with the emergency brake set and try to start the vehicle.

if it starts, you can go to a parts store or find anything around the garage to be able to press the plunger all the way in...

i went to ford and they told me i would need to replace my clutch pedal which was not something i wanted to do for a piece of rubber that fell off, so i super glued a new rubber bushing on and it works like a champ.

I realize this is not the way to actually fix the problem, but it is way cheaper and pretty easy.

**Note: allow plenty of time for the glue to dry of it will come off again!**

I had the same problem, If the car has a manuel transmission, its a part that went bad, on my focus, its a manuel, and the clutch switch was bad, its a easy part to get to, but when it clicks like that, its the entire clutch switch that needs to be replaced, the part is rather expensive

When I smelled the sulfer in my Focus a while back, I found it to be the MAF sensor.

Interior display wont turn off when keys are not in ignition and the car is locked up, so at night the display jus makes the inside of the car light up, is this normal or is it meant to shut off too?

make sure your interior light switch isn;t turned all the way up. this will leave your lights on all the time. if you look in your owners manual to see the switch location. please leave comment.

Are you sure that the thumb wheel switch beside the headlamp switch is not turned all the way up until it clicks?
If it is staying on for 10 minutes this means that the smart junction box is seeing a demand for the interior lights from something like a door ajar switch or the thumb wheel. If it sees that the igntion is in the off position it will turn the lights off after 10 minutes to conserve battery power.
Normal operation is:
The interior lighting delay feature provides temporary illumination of the courtesy lamps after the doors are opened and then closed. The interior lighting delay feature keeps the courtesy lamps on for a period of 25 seconds after all the doors are closed. If during the 25-second delay time the SJB detects that the ignition has been switched out of off, or if the vehicle is locked using the RKE, the courtesy lamp illumination is discontinued
