The gauges have a memory. They will stay where the last read was when you turn the key off and don't move until you turn the key back on. If something happened between the time you turned the key off and back on then they could be stuck in that last position.
Sounds like you may have a ground issue. The cluster uses a common ground. Maybe start by checking the ground wire under the dash that uses one of its mounting bolts in the corner.

The check gauge lite comes on and no battery or oil or temp gauge move

You give no details of vehicle. Have you checked the battery? it requires very little power to light LEDs, but considerably more to move analogue gauges.

Temp gauge not working...is it the gauge or a sensor?

Check if the wire has not come loose from the sensor, if not, remove the wire from the sensor and hold it against any clean spot on the engine block whilst the ignition is on, (you need someone to be inside the car) if the needle travels all the way to the hot position, you will need to replace the sensor

My temp gauge and fuel gauge stopped working on my 1988 toyota pickup all of a sudden, what do you think?

Check all fuses with a test light. If all good, you will need to diagnose each circuit. Look for the temperature sensor, disconnect connector, ground test light and touch wire. Check to see if the gauge move. If it does, you will need a new sensor. Basically the test is the same for fuel gauge. Disconnect connector at the fuel tank and touch contact and see if gauge move. If it does, the sending more than likely is at fault. Make sure you test each wire as there will be a few. Use proper jack stands anytime you work under a car! Let me know your progress.

Overheating and Heat doesn't work

Sounds to me like air trapped somewhere in the coolant's path. You said there's a warm spot on top of the engine. This makes me think of possibly a cracked intake manifold or cylinder head. Did it overheat right before this started? I would have the coolant system 'back flushed' and if the problem is still there, I'd next do a compression test (with the radiator cap off).and check to see if there are air bubbles in the radiator while testing. Good luck, please let me know what you find.

96 ford contour, temp gauge not working

first and foremost check the fuse box. there is a fuse for guages. The temp sensor is somewhere on the manifold and it will have a hard wire with probably a spring around it for protections that runs from the engine to the instrument cluster. You can remove the temp sensor and use a heat gun or propain heat and see if you get any kind of response. I suspect if all your other gauges are working the fuse is good. Most temp sensors do not use power only for lighting of the gauge, It just sends a resistance change to the water temp bulb and it moves the gauge. Is it a seperate gauge or in your insturment cluster? could be simple as a crushed line or the sensor went bad. It is normally self contained. I suspect it is a gauge and not a dummy light? if you can not get the one working in the instrument cluster I suggest going to and autoparts store and replace it which is very easy to do. You can remove the old sensor from the block and reinstall the new on in its place and run the cable back through where the first one was and mount the gauge in another area, It is very important to know the water temp since most computers use this info for setting the correct fuel to air mixture in a closed loop system. That is a diffrent sensor but you need to know the temp yourself to keep from blowing a head gasket or worse which can cause you lots of money to repair, I prefer to mount my own gauge seperate from the cluster, best of luck

Dummy light for cooling system

Hello, the fox coolant warning light flashes when key is first turned on to let you know that the light and its controller are working. On my fox, the controller is shorted and the coolant light flashes every now and then, like it has a personality. Anyway, this information comes from my expirience with foxes and it is backed up by the bentley repair manual. If you need any more advice feel free to e-mail me at [email protected]. Have fun!
