Question about 1994 Honda Accord

1994 honda transmission?

The car was driving just fine and i went into a drive thru and when i put the car back in gear it wouldn't accelerate. it was as if it was in nuetral. it goes in reverse but won't go forward. there was no previous noises before this happened. and now the transmission fluid smells as if its burnt.

    i have a very hard time getting my car to start in the morning... just the other day i was on my way to work and the car was idling very high when i was stopped. when i would accelerate the car was not really going anywhere... i can go in reverse but cannot go forward.. i dont know why this is happening the car worked just fine the day before. help please???

    I have the same problem. It doesn't matter what gear I put the car in, it rev's very high and doesn't barely accelerate. If going up hill it sometimes decelerates. It just randomly started happening, no signs otherwise.



    Does this mean the transmission needs to be replaced, or what?

    car wont go forward transmission slips until i put it in reverse then back in drive.then it pulls fine

Honda uses internally in the transmission,a shift fork,very much like a manual trans,to change from Forward to Reverse,and vice versa.It is likely this fork isn''t moving.The best thing to do is pull trouble codes out of the car,as a malfunctioning sensor or solenoid (they are mounted on the outside of the trans) could cause a problem.Your year Honda is a manual code read,and their is a procedure to follow to get the codes out of the car.Passenger side front kick panel has to be removed,a blue 2 wire connector located,then a jumper wire is used to short the connector out.Insert the jumper wire,then turn the ignition key to the on position,engine off.This puts the car into diagnostic mode.The "S" light,or gear indicator light on the dash will flash a series of numbers,and these are your codes.You have to write down the number of flashes.For example.....2 flashes,followed by 4 flashes would be a code 24.When the codes are pulled,they then have to be looked up on a chart..then the code is diagnosed and repaired.The problem could still be internal,but external causes have to be addressed first.

You have internal transmission damage I expect the clutches on third and fourth gear are wiped out. Its either that or a solenoid gone bad that holds those clutches pressure get it in a transmission shop soon to avoid whole transmission replacement costs.

I would guess that something inside of the transmission has failed and there is no longer a mechanical connection between the motor and the drive axles regardless of what gear you attempt to move in.[sheared splines, broken planetary, etc.] Often when this happens you won't hear any kind of noise because of the failed parts being inside the transmission case...instead the car just won't go anymore. You could have a CV drive axle joint that has failed but generally they will make some noticable rattling or grinding noise as they churn away when you try to go forward or reverse. If something has failed inside of the transmission then the transmission will need to be removed and repaired. It if is just a drive axle joint that has failed then that can be replaced without doing anything to the transmission. Hope this helps and good luck!

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome to the site. I would advise you to have your transmission checked as soon as you can. You might need to check your fluid and change your transmission filter first to see if that helps. But, more then likely, your transmission will need worked on since it slipped. That may be just the beginning.

TRANSMISSION PULLS VERY VERY SLOW IN DRIVE AND ONLY WHEN I ACCELERATE HEAVILY. REVERSE WORKS FINE.


is this car still under warranty? if so take it back to the dealer and don't accept it as repaired till you drive it. sounds like the logic that controls the transmission is flipping out, sometimes they will tell you that it needs a reflash. what this amounts to is that the manufacturer put some not so great programming in the logic when they built the car but now they have a patch or fix that makes it work better but you have to pay them for their time to install the fix. ask them what they will charge you for the privilege and decide if it's worth it to you. there is a recorded technical service bulletin about harsh shifts for your car. well, actually there are two, the latest one a revision of the first. i would try to make this their problem, it really is. hope this helps.

honda small cars have transmision that can not be service. they build gum and tar inside the only way to clean is to add an dettergent and dilute them then do the fluid change the product can be find at any autto parts store

Honda transmissions,as well as most other overdrive transmissions,should be driven at all times in drive 4,or the overdrive position,with the exception of severe driving conditions,such as towing a load,extremely hilly terrain,or long uphill grades,the trans should be taken out of overdrive,and placed in the drive 3 position.This is to prevent the perpetual shifting back and forth of the trans from 3rd into 4th,back to 3rd,back to 4th,back to 3rd,that would eventually damage both the 3rd and 4th gear clutch discs and components.
