96 jimmy key stuck it won't come out or go into 1st gear, steering wont lock

I just replaced the heater core, took the dash all apart and dropped the steering column down. Now I have put everything back together and the key is now stuck and now it will not come out or go into first gear and the steering wheel will not lock. I did not take apart any of the steering column but the two nuts holding it on.

would appreciate your suggestions,

Very frustrated, Danielle

You may need to drop the column back down to get the keys out.when you dropped the column you should have removed the keys first thing so that this dosent happen

The shift interlock button wont release the gear shift to go in park or drive

Its a simple fix - you just need to put your right hand underneath the dash, under the ignition switch with the stuck key, and feel around for the stiff transmission-shift-lock cable, and just giggle it about a bit. Try all directions, don't be aggressive with it; and eventually you will be able to turn the key to the LOCK position. Good luck

I took the cover off the steering column by removing 4 screws. (I had to remove the dash by removing 2 screws behind the Hood release and yanking the cover off. This is how you gain access to the two forward most bolts on the steering column cover.) From hear you should see the shift interlock on the top right of the sterring column. Pull the white lever to release the key lock. Turn the key to lock and remove your key.
I would then purchase a new interlock and replace it.

How do you remove a heater core from a 2000 GMC JImmy

2000 GMC Jimmy heater core replacement in order to replace a heater core in a 2000 gmc jimmy the coolant must be completely drained and the entire dash including radio, vents and panel covers must be removed. four screws hold the top portion(closest to the windshield) in place. they can be found under the windshield defrost vent. after the entire dash is removed a safety harness under the steering column must be removed and the steering column must be dropped to the driver seat. the heater core housing(black plastic) is located right center of the dash and is a two part housing one piece on top of the other. the housing is attached to the fire wall and must detached before replacement can continue. after detaching the housing from the fire wall separate the housing by unscrewing the six screws that hold it together. the heater core is now exposed. disconnect the heater core from the two hoses and discard. installation is the uninstall process in reverse. it is a very long and drawn out process that is not accomplished in just an hour or two . make sure you have most of the day or several afternoons to finish . Good luck and take pictures with your cell phone to use as reference.

How do i replace heater core

you have to remove the hole dash and drop the steering column to remove the heater core that is on passenger side if you don't have some experience you should take it to a shop. You could go to a parts store and get a manual for your vehicle.

1998 Jimmy-heater core

Heater core is located under the dash board, as Jenkins said you need to remove the dash board amd all other panel to access it, you will have to spend at least 2 hours to remove them if you're not familiar with it, becareful not to break plastic locks and tabs. Get your self a service manual for your car and it will be a great help.

How do I drop dash to replace heater core?

I don't know about your model year, but even on my 97 the manual claims that much of the dash has to be removed, involving a considerable amount of work. However, based on others experience and recommendation, I found I could replace the heater core by just dropping the heater/ A/C units bottom section. I couldn't believe how much simpler it was than removing so many other components that the shop manual called for. Check things out completely before ripping the dash apart.
