Question about 2001 Saturn SL

No fire no fuel

Im a tech that works for ertle bros discount auto in sterling co and ive never had my *** woop by a car in a long time but this 2001 saturn sl has just about done it to break it all down ive went through this whole car ignmodule/coil/bcm/pcm/crank sensor/tried relearn process/tech2 scantool the bcm responsive pcm not but i took the pcm out put into another car and with out reprogramming it it fired the other car up so theres got to be a problem in the harrness what am i over looking

You mentioned the harness, which is a good place to look. First, I would check the grounds from the control modules. If you're showing outrageously hi or low values, then I would still suspect the module, even though it worked in the other car. Try checking the battery. Maybe there's a short within the battery plates. It's a long-shot, but an easy problem to rule out.

When I would get my *** whooped by a problem, I would step back and start from the beginning. Take a deep breath. Good luck and I hope you solve the problem. I'm sorry I don't have the magic answer for ya.

Im getting a crank/ no start situation on my 93 chevy astro ext 4.3Ltr v6 and ive never let a vehicle beat me b4 but this one is giving me a sound whoopin - pls help


Easiest way to trouble shoot a crank no start is to spray starting fluid into the air cleaner intake before you crank it. If it fires then dies it is a fuel problem. If it doesn't fire it is a spark problem. If it fires then dies, check the fuel pressure at the engine end of the fuel line. Pressure below spec prevents the injectors from working properly. See shop manual for the proper procedure.
If it doesn't fire put a spark tester at one of the plug wires set to the proper gap to measure the spark voltage being developed by the coil etc. Good luck.

Timing correct firing off


what engine Shawn. ? how can we guess that?
besides following the FSM steps, we could:
ive rebuilt many engines (done many from scratch) +machine work.

1: I check compression 1st. on all cylinders. (i put oil in the cyl, 1 teaspoon) (some pros run oil gallery primers pumps first in pro rebuild shops) i just crank the zero fuel engine until i see max oil pressure.)

oops. ? no oil pressure, oops, compression bad. on 1 jug.
(all that good, so)
2: i then crank it over , with no spark or fuel and check for top end oiling. Valve covers off. (so those V.C go on last)
ive watched many an noob burn up a new engine, not doing the steps in the rebuilders books. it only takes me 30min. to do this. why skip it.?

3: ok , I got top end oil, got 150psi on all jugs. (hard work pay back)

4: i check for spark all cyl. it's strong, & out comes the timing light.
oops, timing is off, or spark wires routed wrong, (dizzy engines)
i check all cylinders for hot spark and #1 timed right. and routed right.
the strobe light never ever lies to me....

MILESTONE 1: TEST FUEL moments.
5: wow ,car runs on test fuel (spray can, CRC engine start with top end lube feature) (fuel pump is shut off on purpose , in all steps to here)
i repeat this say 3 times, listening carefully for noises, that are not good. (why start the engine and watch it blow up. )
It is so good, to hear it run for 3 seconds,, wow.
im 100% sure you can get here..... if you do the steps.
Now comes, light the fires and kick the tires. not FIRST.

6: now comes fuel
how to get fueling to work.
that takes understanding the ASD and how to use a $1 NOID lamp.

I check injectors then add fuel pressure.
are the injectors firing?
injectors ,click cranking ?(stethoscope tool $5)
if not, use the NOID, is the PCM firing the NOID? y/n?

why do this , with pump dead.
Answer to not wreck your new rings, all washed free of all oil buy
injected, unburned raw fuel .. that is why.
i get all my injectors firing then , turn the fuel pump on.
its your hard labor, 50 hours? to build and engine?
wana waste all that? nah.
I last , plug my fuel pump back in,
does the PCM start enging for 2 seconds, and then cuts fuel?

ive never burned up a new engine, yet,
im not lucky, or smart, just had good teachers.

jeep ways!
I kill my pump by pulling the pump feed wire.
i do that because some newer jeeps , kill everything (ASD) including spark,
if you pull the fuel pump relay. (jeeps with new pump monitor features)
so i cut the feed AFT of the relay, on all cars. (conn. pulled)
the FSM shows this spot.

Hi ive gt a 1996 subaru impreza turbo(import) and im having problems with it starting at times,for example i went to bank came out n it wouldnt start,it just turned over and didnt fire,it has done it more...


hi i had similar problem with mine and also done exactly what you tried but i eventually fixed it by replacing the fuel pressor regulator as the problem was the fuel it was just getting too much and flooding it then after a wait it would fire strait up hope this helps

Classic bad ground to the fuel pump...Mine did it untill I hard wired it to a switch with a power light. Car stalls light out I throw the switch and im in control but remember to shut it off or your battery will be dead lol.

fuel pump is faulty it needs very high pressure to work ive just had the same problem with mine take the air filter hose off where it connects to the engine squirt some liquid fuel down the pipe with someone cranking the ignition if it fires up its the pump

when cranking does it turn over smoothly or kind of lumpy? How many miles on it and has it ever had timing belt? You can test fuel pump, disconnect fuel hose in engine compartment and have someone turn key to on see if fuel comes out of line - that'll answer if pumps bad.
