You will need some simple tools a set of metric sockets and a few screwdrivers remove the trim at the hood release lever, disconnect the cable there and then go under the hood and you should see the cable on the drivers side routed along the fender if not you may need to remove the drivers side wheel and the plastic wheel well liner, either way find how the cable is routed and pull it out from the passenger compartment thru the firewall and up to the hood latch, then you will see how it hooks into the hood latch and remove it from there. Make sure to take a screwdriver and pull the arm in the hood latch where the cable hooks in to verify that it moves back and forth freely and is not stuck, if it is you may need to remove the latch and clean and lube it until it is free or you can also buy a new latch i prefer to fix things as it saves everyone money ;) hope this helps and good luck -jeff

How can I open the hood of a '97 Jeep Cherokee when the rod that pops open the latch is disconnected under the hood?

some times pulling the cable sheath from the side as person 2 pulls lever gets it open (not snapped cable, but stretched)
well , that can be hard. (snapped)
its just a cable. so the tech looks at that.
he sees if the center wire in said cable is broken. is it?
i remove it from lever and pull just it (center) open now?
no, we find it pulls out, and is say 2 foot long. 1/2 normal.
he may see , yes, it is then asks self where exactly
he finds it broken say in the middle. so gains access to that point
and cuts the cable there there , and skins back the sheath,
then pulls the good side center wire, and opens the latch.
now he replaces the cable.
and calibrates it per those words in the FSM.

it has 3 fail modes.
  1. lever broken
  2. cable broken or streatched
  3. or latch broken or needs calibration (adjusted to spec).

the only magic here is the yanking cable at mid span.
while BOB pulls lever. (bob is common mechanics name,a joke?)
LOL

So it's about 20 degrees outside, plus a windchill that takes it down to about 5. I need to jump a dead car battery in my '99 Malibu. It is parked in my driveway at all times. Went to pull the hood release...

Hello: Sounds like your hood latch assembly might be frozen, if you have access to a hair dryer you might can thaw it out that way or maybe put an electric blanket on the hood. In-so-far as the hood cable handle go to Walmart,Auto Zone and buy the smallest cheapest vice grips and attach them to the cable and leave them there, after you get it open lubricate the latch assembly with WD-40

Hood latch is pulled open but hood is stuck closed how do I get the latch to release.

Have one person pull on the latch inside and the other person pull up on the hood (sometimes depending may have to use a thin screwdriver to pry up carefully not to chip the paint). Once open lube the hood latch under the hood with wd-40. Make sure the latch inside is still connected to the wire.

Hi. how can i open the hood with a snapped release cable?

Hi. This is a hard one it depends on where it broke, can you cut the housing to get to cable core and pull with pleirs, if it snapped at latch then you will need to remove the grill or go from the bottom and try to hit the release the same wat the cable did, sometime if you grab the cable near the latch and pull hard it will open, good luck.

Front damage, inside cable to open hood snapped from latch. latch damaged and can't open hood. Know of any way to pop the hood? 1991 park avenue

Usually a strong coat hanger will snag the lug the cable attaches too. You will need to bend a 3/8 end J hook from the coat hanger and snag it from the drivers side of the latch to pull on this lug horizontally
' If the hood is trashed just zip a hole into the hood were that latch is located with a disc grinder and a cut off wheel instead

Hood wont open on 1999 dodge durango

The cable to the hood is most likely broken. The hood can be opened from underneath by pulling the cable and replacement is not terribly difficult once the hood is open.

325i Hood won't open after front end collision

with out seeing a pic of the damage, you need to pull the latch inside & then go pull the latch out side, some times both have to be done simultaniously, two people, you may need to make a wire pulling device with a coat hanger to pull the out side catch latch at the top of the hood. Good luck

The hood release is broken on my 95 buick century and i ant open the hood any more even using plyers to pull the wires im sure i need to replace it or somthing but dont even know how to go about that if...

I think you should be able to get your hood open if you can get your hand up to it, I think that you can actually trigger the latch at the actual cable connection lever to get it open. Replacing the cable is a piece of cake. Remove the old on inside and remove your latch and disconnect the cable from it just goes in a groove, pull your old on out but attach a long piece of soft wire pull the cable out from inside the car. You may have to help to get it through the fire wall. after you remove it, attach the wire that you pulled through and tie it securely to the new cable, have some one help you and slowly work the cable back through and route it back the same way the old one was, reconnect to our latch and install latch exactly in the same place it was when you removed it, you should be able to tell by where the old bolts had been . Hope this helps you! God Bless, and Merry Christmas!
