Almost certainly the radiator requires cleaning or most likely for a 10 year old car, replacing. Have a garage look at it. I'd expect that the lower 1/4 of the radiator is deteriorated (corroded) badly. You should replace the radiator hoses and clamps at the same time.

The fans do not come on immediately when you start the engine. One comes on automatically when the temperature gets high enough: there's a temperature switch in the bottom of the radiator that controls this. The other fan is for the A/C and turns on when needed. It usually starts when the A/C is turned on and the car is not moving.

When the car is moving more than about 20kph the fans are generally not needed.

Check engine comes in when engine starts to overheat, which it does in slow traffic. Radiator, fans, water pump are OK.

Did you check/replace the thermostat? Another possible cause may be hair line cracks in the head(s).

2001 ford focus when driving the temp needle jumps into the red zone the exclamation mark lights up followed by the engine management light also the cooling fan runs while the car is running water lev

If the car is heating up and so the temperature shoots up then it is possible that there are issues that need to be addressed on the car cooling system. If not there are issues with the sensor, the panel control or the ECU must be checked.
Check for Engine heating;
The overheating of the car can be due to many reasons and you need to check on each one to confirm the working of the system.
1. In the first place the working of the engine must be assessed. it must be smooth with a good indication that the tuning timing and the power seems good. This will confirm that the settings of the engine is good and so there is less scope that the engine seems to heat up on its own.
2. Secondly the radiator pressure cap must be tight and good, the radiator MUST not loose coolant after a run or in a few days time- since this must be a sealed system and there is no scope of water overflow or loss unless there is a leak- sometimes the leak is too microscopic as under high pressure only steam might escape and so reduce the coolant. So check for leaks while the engine is hot , specially the radiator, the hose or the fittings.
3. The working of the water pump must be good to ensure a good flow and circulation, so check for leak in the water pump, check for presence of water in the exhaust or leaking on the engine gaskets.
4.Make sure that the coolant is good and clean if not drain and refill , if there is presence of rust please have a good flushing of the radiator or else the chances are that the radiator ports can be blocked and reduce the efficiency of the cooling .
5. Finally the cooling fan, the radiator fan must be working, check the thermostat/thermistor to work accordingly with good flow, have a good water jet wash on the radiator for a clean radiator cooling fin exposure.

The fan running is normal. you need to find where the coolant is leaking. If there are no visable leaks. then suspect the radiator/reservoir cap.

Engine violently overheating. New thermostat, new radiator cap, just did a flush, and has new coolant. What should I check next

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome to the site. You need to make sure your fans are working properly. If they are not, check the fuses. If the fuse is good, test the fan and the wires to the fan for current. You could have a bad water pump or water pump impeller. It may be a bad head gasket. Make sure the radiator is working correctly. Make sure that there are no leaks on the engine. Start the vehicle and inspect the engine for leaks. Check your oil and make sure coolant is not inside it. It is possible for it to leak inside.

Hello. The longer you drive this car without having the leak repaired the greater the chances are that you will be sitting on the side of the highway somewhere. Go directly to an AAMCO or similar auto parts shop and have the leak repaired. The reason why the antifreexe leaked out but the water didn't is because the total amount of fluid in your system is decreasing all the time.

Car overheating

First you need to find out where the leak or area the coolant is coming from. It may just be running out of coolant and over heating. If the fans aren't on when the car is running it could be the overheating issue and the coolant is purging out of the overflow.
