86 subaru gl wagon not firing.

I have a 86 wagon gl. While driving the car died and would not restart. I thought it was a fuel problem, but it would not start sparying starting fluid in the carb. I then check the spark and it did not spark. Would this be a distributor problem, a coil or something completly different.

Same problem, engine turns over but no spark at plugs

  • Anonymous Mar 19, 2014

all fluid levels full: anti-freeze, oil, fuel etc. Was driving at slow speed (20-25mph) when motor stopped. Engine turns over when starter engaged but cylinders won't fire. Is it no spark to cylinders or no fuel delivery?

I have the same problem with my 86 GL 4WD. One day it started to turn, and then lost all power. I couldn't even turn on the lights. I have played with the ignition switch wires, and gotten it to fire. I think there may be a short somewhere in the switch or the wires to the harness, but I have not isolated it yet. You might check your ignition switch and wiring...

Check all of your fuses, sometimes a short will trip a fuse that controls the spark to the engine, and it will shut off an not start all of the sudden. Im not sure what one, but check them all and replace them if they are blown. Other than that it could be the ignition coil or a bad distributor?

There has to be a fuse related to the power windows, check the owners manual. it may reside in a secondary panel in the engine compartment.

Ack like it is running low on fuel while driving or stop

Crazybonezz, check your fuel pressure, should be 50 psi from the pump or 30 psi within the system 'loop'.

Where is the fuel pump located on a 1984 subaru Gl ?

I have a 1984 Gl Wagon 4WD; the fuel pump is located on the passenger side, on the frame rail under the back door, just in front of the rear wheel. It and the fuel filter are accessed by dropping the mounting plate that also serves as a protective plate. Again, this is the 4WD non-turbo EA81 engine GL Wagon; could be different on the 2WD version.

Turns over, has spark but will not fire up

The fuel pump is in the gas tank, you test it by hooking up a pressure guage to the fuel injector supply manifold, there is a port there that looks like a tire valve, you will need a fuel pressure guage, Kragen auto and other stores will loan these out, you can also open the gas cap and listen for a humming type noise when the key is first turned on, but the fuel pressure test is best.
