You can take the thermostat and place it into a clear pot. Pyrex pots or old coffee pots work well. You'll get the water hot and see if the thermostat opens. Take a piece of wire to position the thermostat so you can watch it while it's in the pot. That's one way. Another way is to run the engine until ithe guage shows that it's at operating temp. Check the temp of the upper and lower hoses. The lower hose may be hard to reach to check it. Both hoses should be about the same temp. I use an infra-red thermometer to check it this way. What exactly is your car doing? Evidently getting hot, but what are the symptoms?

this is usually an indication that there is air in the system and or possibly the engine is overheating causing the coolant to boil. try changing the thermostat and have the system checked for a bad head gasket.

Follow upper radiator hose from radiator, back to where it connects to engine. That end of the hose should be connected to the thermostat housing.

Car over heats after driving about 2-3 hours


replace thermostat and inspect fluids, I would make sure the fluids are full and then check for any leaks, I hate dirty engines if yours is greasy take it to a car wash and spend a couple bucks cleaning it up,

1998 merc. sable I replaced bank 1 sensor 1 oxigen sensor still get code P0135 drove 300 miles to reset mil's code still there (help)


Fords are bad about vacum leaks, check all vacum hoses repair as needed.Vacum leak will give an o2 sensor code.

It does not overheat on the gage but it overflows

cloged radiator or head gasket blown
clogged radiator let cool then run car without radiator cap when warms up the water should be running fast in direction without bubbles
if slow the there is a clog in radiator

the other things of over heating tranny low on fluid
oil fluid low
drive line fluid or grease low
binding brakes
warped fan blades or improper fan clutch or defective
hope this helped its off the top of my head since im not there
