Question about 1999 Ford Contour

My 1999 Ford Contour has a variable valve timing/camshaft which I don't know how to properly time. Also how do you remove the cam belt sprocket so that the head can be removed. It looks like it is held on by a Torxs head bolt. Is this correct?

The crank notch should be up and the two square lobes have to be pointing up square with engine i used welders vise grips yes the cam bolts are torx

Where is vct solenoid


Hi there:A code P0012 refers to the VVT (Variable Valve Timing) or VCT (Variable Camshaft Timing) components and the car's PCM (Powertrain Control Module, also called an ECM).
That consists of a few different components but the P0012 DTC specifically refers to the camshaft (cam) timing. In this case, if the cam timing is over-********, the engine light will be illluminated and the code will be set. The "A" camshaft is either the intake, left, or front camshaft.


A P0012 DTC trouble code may be caused by one or more of the following:

- Incorrect camshaft timing

- Wiring problems (harness/wiring) in intake timing control valve control solenoid system

- Continuous oil flow to VCT piston chamber

- Failed timing valve control solenoid (stuck open)



On Ford, the VCT solenoid is located at top of cylinder head underneath the valve cover and goes around one camshaft. You will need to remove the valve cover, the timing cover, then remove the timing belt, the camshaft sprockets, and finally the camshafts to remove the vct solenoid as it goes around the camshaft. You can use 2001-2003 models with same engine.



VCT or Variable Cam Timing solenoid is a device used in modern engines to change camshaft position timing in relevance to engine speed and engine timing allowing the engine to produce more horsepower without adding excessive overlap to the camshaft design.


The way the VCT Solenoid works is as follows:
The VCT solenoid works with oil pressure, it receives a signal from the ECM when the camshaft needs to be rotated either in the advanced mode or ******** mode depending on engine load and speed.The VCT solenoid is able to accomplish that by altering the oil flow in the passages that lead to the cam phaser(s), there are passages to advance the valve timing ( open the valves earlier), and passages that direct the oil to ****** the valve timing ( open them later)

The purpose of the VCT or Variable Cam Timing system is to allow the engine to move larger volumes of air in and out of the cylinders to generate maximum horsepower.
Vehicles with DOHC ( Dual Overhead Cam ) engines usually have two VCT solenoids mounted in each cylinder head, one for each camshaft, allowing the Engine Control Computer to activate each VCT timing mechanism in each Camshaft separately.
NOTE: The Cam phaser is mounted on the front of the camshaft(s) it is driven by the engine's timing chain or timing belt depending on the engine's design.

P0340 - Cam Timing

SYMPTOMS/CONDITIONS
of a mistimed camshaft system (all must apply):
  1. Camshafts have previously been removed from the engine.
  2. Engine runs rough.
  3. Vehicle sets P0340 (camshaft sensor code).
  4. Camshaft sensor has been checked with a known, properly operating camshaft sensor.

CORRECT:
The diagram in the manuals should show the timing marks on both cam gears to be on the blue timing chain links.

Timing Chain Replacement procedure steps


1. Jack up front of vehicle and support on safety stands. Remove left front wheel.
2. Remove alternator/water pump drive belt. Remove water pump pulley.
3. Remove A/C belt if equipped.
4. Remove valve cover.
5. Remove upper timing belt cover.
6. Rotate crankshaft until No. 1 cylinder is at TDC compression stroke and camshaft sprocket timing marks align with edge of cylinder head. "UP" cast on sprocket will be at top when sprocket is in correct position. Crankshaft may be rotated using a socket wrench inserted through access hole in left fender well (engine rotates counterclockwise).
7. Unbolt and remove crank pulley. Remove rubber seal washers from belt tensioner pivot and adjustment bolts protruding through lower belt cover. Remove belt cover retaining bolts and remove cover from below.
8. Remove concave belt retainer from end of crankshaft. If timing belt is to be reused, mark direction of rotation before removing.
9. Loosen belt tensioner pivot and adjustment bolts. Push tensioner away from belt and retighten adjustment bolt to hold tensioner in this position. Remove belt.
10. Insert a suitable tool through cam sprocket and brace against cylinder head. Remove bolt and pull sprocket from camshaft.
11. Without dislodging key, install new sprocket on camshaft. Torque bolt to 22 ftlb (30 Nm).
12. Install new timing belt by starting at crank gear and working it over cam sprocket in clockwise direction. Ensure that timing marks are properly aligned.
13. Release tensioner by loosening adjustment bolt. After tensioner contacts belt, retighten bolt.
14. Rotate engine at least one full turn (counterclockwise) and check that timing marks are aligned. Loosen adjustment bolt and allow tensioner to take out any remaining belt slack. Torque adjustment and pivot bolts to 22 ftlb (30 Nm).
15. Install remaining components in reverse order of removal. Torque fasteners to following values:

Cam Sprocket Bolt - 22 ftlb (30 Nm)
Tensioner Pivot Bolt - 22 ftlb (30 Nm)

Hi, I am looking for a timing belt diagram for a 1998 2.5ltr Subaru Outback or can you tell me which timing marks on the sprockets line up to the encasing.


Timing Belt Cover, Belt & Sprockets Removal & Installation 2.5L Engine To Remove:
  1. Remove the drive belts.
  2. Remove the A/C compressor drive belt tensioner. Timing belt & cover DOHC exploded view subaru-03-25-6470.gif

  3. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  4. Remove the mounting bolts and left timing belt cover.
  5. Remove the mounting bolts and right timing belt cover.
  6. Remove the mounting bolts and front timing belt cover.
  7. Vehicles W/ M/T: Remove the timing belt guide.
  8. Ensure that the timing belt rotation arrows are still visible. If the marks are worn off, place new rotation marks on the belt. Timing belt alignment marks DOHC subaru-03-25-6472.gif

  9. Turn the crankshaft using a breaker bar and special adapter socket on the crankshaft. Align the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket (1), left intake sprocket (2), left exhaust sprocket (3), right intake sprocket (4) and right exhaust sprocket (5) with the notches in cylinder block and timing belt cover.
  10. Paint alignment marks on the timing belt at the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets timing marks. CAUTION
    Do not turn the camshaft sprockets with the timing belt removed. The valves heads will contact each other causing the valve stems to bend.
  11. Remove the lower right idler pulley.
  12. Remove the timing belt.
  13. Remove the upper right idler pulley.
  14. Remove the lower left (toothed) idler pulley.
  15. Remove the belt tensioner.
  16. Hold the sprocket and remove the left intake and exhaust camshafts.
  17. Hold the sprocket and remove the right intake and exhaust camshafts.
  18. Remove the crankshaft sprocket.
To Install:
  1. Install the crankshaft sprocket.
  2. Hold the sprocket and install the right intake and exhaust camshafts with the mounting bolts. Tighten 58 ft-lb (78 Nm).
  3. Hold the sprocket and install the left intake and exhaust camshafts with the mounting bolts. Tighten 58 ft-lb (78 Nm).
  4. Reset the automatic belt tensioner as follows:
    • Remove the mounting bolt and belt tensioner. NOTE: Do not exceed more than 2,205 lb. (9,807 N).
    • Place the belt tensioner on a press. Press the adjuster rod down gradually (using more than 3 minutes) 66- lb (165 N) or more until the adjuster rod is aligned with the stop pin hole in the cylinder.
    • Insert a 0.08 in (2 mm) diameter pin or hex wrench into the pin hole to lock the adjuster rod.
    • Install the automatic belt tension adjuster with the mounting bolt. Tighten 18 ft-lb (25 Nm).
  5. Install the lower left (toothed) idler pulley. Tighten 29 ft-lb (39 Nm).
  6. Install the upper right idler pulley with the mounting bolt. Tighten 29 ft-lb (39 Nm). Crankshaft sprocket and oil pump cover alignment marks 2.5L DOHC subaru-03-25-4890.gif

  7. Align the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket with the mark on the oil pump cover. Timing belt alignment marks DOHC subaru-03-25-6472.gif

  8. Align the single timing mark on the right exhaust camshaft sprocket with the notch on the timing belt cover.
  9. When the single timing mark on the right exhaust camshaft sprocket is aligned with the notch on the timing belt cover, ensure that the double lines on the intake camshaft and exhaust camshaft sprockets are aligned.
  10. Align the single timing mark on the left exhaust camshaft sprocket with the notch on the timing belt cover by turning the sprocket counter clockwise (viewed from front of engine).
  11. Ensure that the double lines on the intake camshaft and exhaust camshaft sprockets are aligned when the single timing mark on the left exhaust camshaft sprocket is aligned with the notch on the timing belt cover. CAUTION
    • The camshafts can be rotated independently causing the valves heads to contact each other resulting in bent valve stems.
    • When the timing belt is removed the camshafts will turn to the lowest cam lobe position by the force of the valve springs. Before installing the timing belt the 4 camshafts are in the lowest lift position (valves closed).
    • When the camshafts are rotated to install the timing belts, # 2 intake and # 4 exhaust cam lobes of the left camshafts are held to push their corresponding valves down. In this position, these valves are held in the open position. Right camshafts are held so their cam lobes do not push the valves down.
    • The left camshafts must be rotated from the lowest lobe position to the position where the timing belt can be installed at the smallest possible angle in order to prevent intake and exhaust valve contact. Camshaft sprockets rotation subaru-03-25-6473.gif

    • Do not turn the camshafts in the direction shown in the illustration because the valves will open at the same time and contact each other.
    CAUTION
    If the timing belt alignment is off the mark buy more than 3 teeth, the valves and pistons may have contact.

  12. Align the timing marks on the belt with the marks on the sprockets in the numerical order shown in the illustration.
  13. Install the lower right idler pulley with the mounting bolt. Tighten 29 ft-lb (39 Nm).
  14. Ensure that the timing mark alignment is correct and remove the tensioner stop pin.
  15. Vehicles W/ M/T: Install the timing belt guide and temporarily tighten the mounting bolts.
  16. Vehicles W/ M/T: Measure the clearance between the guide and timing belt. The clearance should measure 0.039 ± 0.020 in (1.0 ± 0.5 mm).
  17. Vehicles W/ M/T: Tighten the guide bolts 7.2 ft-lb (9.8 Nm).
  18. Install and secure the front timing belt cover with the mounting bolts.
  19. Install and secure the right timing belt cover with the mounting bolts.
  20. Install and secure the left timing belt cover with the mounting bolts.
  21. Install the crankshaft pulley.
  22. Install the A/C compressor drive belt tensioner.
  23. Install the drive belts.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Position crankshaft so that No. 1 piston is at Top Dead Center (TDC).
  3. Remove the splash guard.
  4. If equipped, remove the cruise control actuator.
  5. Loosen and remove the power steering pump drive belt.
  6. Remove the two bolts that attach the top power steering hose to the power steering pump. Cover and seal the hose and the open port of the pump.
  7. Clamp shut the power steering reservoir return hose, remove it from the return line, and remove the power steering pump and reservoir as an assembly.
  8. Remove the remaining accessory drive belts. Refer to Section 1 for specific details.
  9. Place a piece of wood between the oil pan and the jack, support the engine with a jack.
  10. Remove upper engine bracket.
  11. Remove the valve cover.
  12. Make sure the engine is at Top Dead Center (TDC) for No. 1 cylinder. The engine is at TDC for No. 1 cylinder when:
    • The white Top Dead Center (TDC) mark on the crankshaft pulley is aligned with the raised pointer.
    • The UP marks on both camshaft sprockets are at the topmost (12 O'clock) position.
    • The holes in the No. 1 exhaust and intake cam journals align with the holes in the camshaft. A 4.5 mm or 5/32inch drill bit or Allen key can be placed through the holes to prevent the cams from rotating while removing or installing the cam belt.
  13. Remove the crankshaft pulley. For details, see crankshaft pulley removal in this section.
  14. Remove the timing belt covers.
  15. Loosen the adjusting bolt 1/2-1 turn. Release the tension from the belt by pushing on the tensioner, then retighten the adjusting bolt.
  16. Remove the timing belt.

To install:

  1. Be sure the timing marks are properly aligned.
  2. Install the timing belt around the crankshaft sprocket and then stuff a clean rag or paper towel between the belt and the sensor guard to hold the belt engaged with the sprocket teeth.
  3. Place the flat side of the belt clockwise around the top of the tensioner and then engage the toothed portion of the timing belt counterclockwise around the bottom of the water pump sprocket.
  4. Carefully pull the timing belt upward but do notmove the crankshaft. If the crankshaft moved, carefully realign the crankshaft timing belt sprocket with the TDC marks. Carefully engage the teeth of the timing belt onto the exhaust camshaft sprocket, but only install the belt about 1/3 of the way onto the sprocket.
  5. Grasp the timing belt on the toothed side and gently lift the belt enough to begin sliding it onto the intake camshaft sprocket.
  6. Once the belt has started to slide onto the intake camshaft sprocket, slide the belt equally onto both the intake and exhaust camshaft sprockets.
  7. Quickly loosen and then retighten the timing belt tensioner bolt.
  8. Remove the tools from the camshaft caps used for securing the camshafts, and remove the cloth used to keep the timing belt engaged in the crankshaft sprocket.
  9. Apply a clockwise load on the intake camshaft sprocket bolt to remove any slack between the intake camshaft sprocket, exhaust camshaft sprocket and the crankshaft timing belt sprocket, then loosen and retighten the timing belt tensioner adjusting bolt to allow tension to be applied to the belt.
  10. Install the crankshaft pulley sprocket/timing belt guide washer.
  11. Install the lower and upper timing covers.
  12. Install the crankshaft pulley and tighten the bolt to 130 ft. lbs. (177 Nm).

    WARNING

    If any binding is felt when adjusting the timing belt tension by turning the crankshaft, STOP turning the engine, because the pistons may be hitting the valves.

  13. Rotate the crankshaft about 5-6 times counterclockwise to seat the timing belt.
  14. Position the No. 1 piston to TDC.
  15. Locate and remove the rubber plug for the timing belt tensioner on the lower timing belt cover.
  16. Loosen the adjusting bolt 1/2 turn by
  17. Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise 3 teeth on the camshaft pulley.
  18. Tighten the adjusting bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54Nm).
  19. Retighten the crankshaft pulley bolt to 130 ft. lbs. (177 Nm).
  20. Install the valve cover.
  21. Install the engine mounting bracket, then remove the jack.
  22. If removed, install the cruise control actuator.
  23. Install the accessory drive belts.
  24. Install the splash guard.
  25. Connect the negative battery cable.
  26. Check the engine operation and road test.

WARNING

Never allow antifreeze, oil or solvents to come into with a timing belt. If this occurs immediately wash the solution from the timing belt. Also, never excessive bend or twist the timing belt; this can damage the belt so that its lifetime is severely shortened.

Timing chain is only available in the 3.3L and 3.8L engines.

Yours has a belt. (if you're SURE its a 3.0L)

Here is the info on changing it...

3.0L Engine
The timing belt can be inspected by removing the upper front outer timing belt cover.
Working on any engine (especially overhead camshaft engines) requires much care be given to valve timing. It is good practice to set the engine up at TDC No. 1 cylinder firing position before beginning work. Verify that all timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets are properly aligned before removing the timing belt and starting camshaft service. This serves as a point of reference for all work that follows. Valve timing is very important and engine damage will result if the work is incorrect.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the accessory drive belts. Remove the engine mount insulator from the engine support bracket.
  3. Remove the engine support bracket. Remove the crankshaft pulleys and torsional damper. Remove the timing belt covers.
  4. Rotate the crankshaft until the sprocket timing marks are aligned. The crankshaft sprocket timing mark should align with the oil pump timing mark. The rear camshaft sprocket timing mark should align with the generator bracket timing mark and the front camshaft sprocket timing mark should align with the inner timing belt cover timing mark.
  5. If the belt is to be reused, mark the direction of rotation on the belt for installation reference.
  6. Loosen the timing belt tensioner bolt and remove the timing belt.
  7. If necessary, remove the timing belt tensioner.
  8. Remove the crankshaft sprocket flange shield and crankshaft sprocket.
  9. Hold the camshaft sprocket using spanner tool MB990775, or equivalent, and remove the camshaft sprocket bolt and washer. Remove the camshaft sprocket.
  10. To install:
  11. Install the camshaft sprocket on the camshaft with the retaining bolt and washer. Hold the camshaft sprocket using spanner tool MB990775, or equivalent, and tighten the bolt to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  12. Install the crankshaft sprocket.
  13. If removed, install the timing belt tensioner and tensioner spring. Hook the spring upper end to the water pump pin and the lower end to the tensioner bracket with the hook out.
  14. Turn the timing belt tensioner counterclockwise full travel in the adjustment slot and tighten the bolt to temporarily hold it in this position.
  15. Rotate the crankshaft sprocket until its timing mark is aligned with the oil pump timing mark.
  16. Rotate the rear camshaft sprocket until its timing mark is aligned with the timing mark on the generator bracket.
  17. Rotate the front (radiator side) camshaft sprocket until its mark is aligned with the timing mark on the inner timing belt cover.
  18. Install the timing belt on the crankshaft sprocket while keeping the belt tight on the tension side.
  19. Position the timing belt over the front camshaft sprocket (radiator side). Next, position the belt under the water pump pulley, then over the rear camshaft sprocket and finally over the tensioner.
  20. Apply rotating force in the opposite direction to the front camshaft sprocket (radiator side) to create tension on the timing belt tension side. Check that all timing marks are aligned.
  21. Install the crankshaft sprocket flange.
  22. Loosen the tensioner bolt and allow the tensioner spring to tension the belt.
  23. Rotate the crankshaft 2 full turns in a clockwise direction. Turn the crankshaft smoothly and in a clockwise direction only.
  24. Align the timing marks. If all marks are aligned, tighten the tensioner bolt to 250 inch lbs. (28 Nm). Otherwise repeat the installation procedure.
  25. Install the timing belt covers. Install the engine support bracket. Tighten the support bracket mounting bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  26. Install the engine mount insulator, torsional damper and crankshaft pulleys. Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt to 112 ft. lbs. (151 Nm).
  27. Install the accessory drive belts and adjust them to the proper tension.
  28. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  29. Run the engine and check for proper operation. Road test the vehicle.

Getting P0011 code on Hyundai Sonata. Can anyone tell me what it means?


more than likely you have a bad oil control valve if in fact you have an 06 sonata. They are chain driven engines... You can ohm out the valve and get a good reading even when the valve is bad. Pull it out and check to see if it is clogged, if it is thats more likely your problem. If it is clean, go ahead and replace the valve. Hyundai calls them the oil control valve (OCV) and usually located on the head close the the variable valve sprocket.

Timing marks on 1999 Ford Ranger 2.5L.


Rotate the engine so that No. 1 cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke. Check that the timing marks are aligned on the camshaft and crankshaft pulleys. An access plug is provided in the cam belt cover so that the camshaft timing can be checked without removal of the cover or any other parts. Set the crankshaft to TDC by aligning the timing mark on the crank pulley with the TDC mark on the belt cover. Look through the access hole in the belt cover to make sure that the timing mark on the cam drive sprocket is lined up with the pointer on the inner belt cover.

  1. Loosen the alternator retaining bolts and remove the drive belt from the pulleys. Remove the water pump pulley.
  2. Loosen and position the power steering pump mounting bracket and position it aside.
  3. Remove the four timing belt outer cover retaining bolts and remove the cover. Remove the crankshaft pulley and belt guide.
  4. Loosen the belt tensioner pulley assembly, then position a camshaft belt adjuster tool (T74P-6254-A or equivalent) on the tension spring rollpin and retract the belt tensioner away from the timing belt. Tighten the adjustment bolt to lock the tensioner in the retracted position.
  5. Remove the timing belt.

To install:
  1. Install the new belt over the crankshaft sprocket and then counterclockwise over the auxiliary and camshaft sprockets, making sure the lugs on the belt properly engage the sprocket teeth on the pulleys. Be careful not to rotate the pulleys when installing the belt.
  2. Release the timing belt tensioner pulley, allowing the tensioner to take up the belt slack. If the spring does not have enough tension to move the roller against the belt (belt hangs loose), it might be necessary to manually push the roller against the belt and tighten the bolt.

The spring cannot be used to set belt tension; a wrench must be used on the tensioner assembly.
  1. Rotate the crankshaft two complete turns by hand (in the normal direction of rotation) to remove the slack from the belt, then tighten the tensioner adjustment and pivot bolts to specifications. Refer to the necessary illustrations. Make sure the belt is seated properly on the pulleys and that the timing marks are still in alignment when No. 1 cylinder is again at TDC/compression.
  2. Install the crankshaft pulley and belt guide.
  3. Install the timing belt cover.
  4. Install the water pump pulley and fan blades. Install upper radiator hose if necessary. Refill the cooling system.
  5. Position the alternator and drive belts, then adjust and tighten it to specifications.
  6. Start the engine and check the ignition timing. Adjust the timing, if necessary.

Need the timing marks for 99 ford contour


There are no marks. You need to remove #1 spark plug. Bring the piston up on TDC (all the way up). Then remove valve cover. On the drivers side of the camshafts you will see a slot ground into the ends. The slots are off center of the camshft. There is a tool to fit into the slots tieing both cams at the same time. Once the tool is installed and the #1 piston was up before you locked the cams you can remove the T-belt for replacement & water pump replacement.
