Nothing wrong with that - some cars are programmed that way. The Mazda RX7 would go to 3000RPM to help get the catalytic converters up to temperature as a way to pass cold-start emissions standards. Don't sweat it.

High Idle at Start Up

This sounds like the RPM may be a little high, but normal operation is called a "cold start routine". Like the old fashion Choke, the "cold start routine" is suppose to increase the RPM for several minutes and then decrease to running idle speed. This will engage in each "cold" start, but not on a warm engine. It is designed to do this.

Usually when an engine runs higher RPM than it is set for, it means extra air is entering the engine from somewhere. Using a spray water filled bottle, go around seams and also spray vacuum lines and the EGR pod while the engine is running. Any openings will draw in the water and affect RPM. Then you will have found the leak.

Now you can look up you exact engine on the Web and find out 2 things. If it has a 2 piece intake manifold and if it has intake Manifold runners. The 2 piece design often failed when the gasket holding the 2 halves started dissolving. The intake runners, could stick out of position and make RPM higher.

Now aside from these 2 items, you might get a Code showing that the engine is running lean. This would actually not be showing the lack of fuel, but the overabundance of air coming from the leaks.

89 cutlass cierra crank but wont start when wet out unless gas pedal is pushed

This should be a drive by wire vehicle meaning it has a cable for the throttle body. First thing would be to see if any error codes can be pulled up (most parts stores will do that for free.) Drive by wire versus the late model that use electronic control for the idle have a IAC or idle air control which when first started controls the idle air intake--all air is run by it to idle the vehicle when cold--

Usual symptoms are rather high idle when cold engine or even idle and RPM jumping up and down and stalling when cold.

Another way if idle does drop when cold is tapping the gas--engine will still run until hot. Means not usually a fuel pump issue.

You could also have if the vehicle is fuel injected a dirty Mass air flow sensor, a throttle position sensor, etc.

These can be if the vehicle has them cleaned using a special zero residue spray cleaner.

First have it scanned to see what if any errors it shows--the computer.

The car starts with iddle to hight

Sounds like a possible vacuum leak. A vacuum leak will cause a high idle because the intake is pulling in more air than it thinks. Air is drawn in from the air box and THAT air passes through a mass air flow sensor. This sensor measures the amount of air coming in and the computer determins how much fuel to mix with that. If you have a vacuum leak, the mass air flow sensor does not get to measure that air thus you are getting more air through the intake than what the computer is delivering fuel for, resulting in a high idle. Does the idle stay higher than normal even after its warm? Can you hear a hissing sound under the hood? One way of locating a vacuum leak is by using carburettor cleaner. With the engine running, spray around the gasket area between the intake and the head. You are listening for a sudden change in RPM. If you hear this change in RPM, that location you sprayed is the source of your vacuum leak. If not at the gasket areas, spray all around all hoses going to the intake and all hose connections going to the intake (don't forget the hose that goes to the brake booster which is what the brake fluid resivour is attached to) Again, you are trying to create a change in RPM. Good luck!

Oldsmobile Delta 88, Idles High on Cold start with DTCs

Sounds like a vacumn leak. Gasket under intake plenum may be leaking. Be sure the pcv valve has the o-ring around it in the correct place also as it will set a code.

sounds real easy either a bad idle air control solenoid or more likley a blown throttle body gasket. to test fro a blown gasket, with engine running and cool spray carb cleaner or brake cleaner around base of tb were it bolts to intake. when it hits the bad area, should idle down and be normal for a second or 2. iac is possible, try this first since its so common and let me know

High idle at starting

Sounds like you have a vacuum leak in the air intake side. Check all your small and large hoses around the throttle body. Also check your idle air valve....cylindrical device connected to the the air box at the front of the engine.

Cold Start Idle Issue

Problem might be the air control valve, it's located at the right side rear of intake manifold and has a hose going to the air intake duct from the air cleaner, as a test you might try pinching off that hose when the idle is a problem.
