SOURCE: 1986 volvo 760 turbo shifts hard into 3rd gear.

All automatic transmission models in 1985,1986 and onwards used either a ZF series transmission or an AW7x transmission. In either instance, shifting is accomplished by the cable at the throttle body, connected to a cam inside the transmission case. Since no brake bands and only clutch packs are utilized, it's important to keep the fluid changed according to the manufacturer's Specifications. First, have the oil serviced and screen changed. At the same time, remove the magnets and clean them of shavings. Then, adjust the cable so that it is very nearly slack on the throttle stop. This is accomplished by moving the cable adjusting jam nuts back and forth. Shortening the cable increases the shift map for shorter, harder shifts and vice versa; though it is important to ensure the crimp at the cable sheath is approximately 1mm away from the sheath end. Remember that this system is controlled by this cable and the internal governor inside the transmission case. Letting up on the gas allows the cable slack to allow the governor to increase the line pressure, allowing this car to shift to 3rd gear.

Early model ZF series are rather fragile, AW70 and AW71 series are more robust, and AW72 series transmissions are among the most stout in production at the time. Always ensure that the transmission fluid is normal in color, at the appropriate level and not full of contaminates. Do not make these adjustments until the transmission service has been completed, since there is a possibility of damage to the transmission valve body with an over adjusted cable.

To service, remove the transmission oil pan after draining the fluid. It could be hot, so ensure safety comes first to aviod burns. Remove the filter/screen. Remove the gasket and all traces of it on the sealing faces, ensuring that you do not scratch the facings on the case or the oil pan. Attached inside are several magnets, which can be removed for cleaning. They are there to catch shavings from the machining operations before they can damage the transmission. Install a new filter/screen, gasket and finally the oil pan. Install the bolts loosely and tighten only to the Specifications - overtightening will ruin the gasket and possibly damage the oil pan. Fill the transmission with the proper transmission fluid (Mercon/Dexron IIe per the transmission - see specs first) and check the fluid level, adding and topping off a little at time. Always check the fluid level on flat, level ground, passing through each gear range and waiting two minutes, cold or hot.Do not overfill, as this could damage the transmission or cause fluid to be ejected from the filler tube. Then perform the cable check, taking care to not overtighten it or else the cam will never fall against the stop. Test drive the vehicle at the end, making fine adjustments as needed.

How to replace the shift linkage in the pontiac montana van

On that van, like many other GM front-wheel-drive vehicles, the shift cable goes through a bracket on the transmission to the linkage( the little metal arm). Where the cable connects to the linkage, there is a ball stud. It takes quite a bit of force to disconnect the cable from that. If it became disconnected at that ball without any other outside influence, the shift cable may need to be replaced. You can try pushing the plastic end of the shift cable back on to that ball stud ,it should click into place.
If the ball stud became disconnected from the linkage(little metal arm), the linkage would need to be replaced.
There should be a locknut holding the linkage to the transmission stud right above the range selector switch. If it came loose of there, you may need a new linkage, and to replace that nut

I have a 1985 corvette with a 4 speed auto trans drove fine last week took it out out today and now it will not shift out of 1st but if I let the gas up it goes in when I give it gas it slips out then back...

Well,if you have not done so already. Get a transmission filter kit.Change the fluid, replace the gasket. Transmission fluid does lose viscosity. If you have already done this,i recommend a ****** shop.It could be any number of things inside the transmission, like linkage.

Its not shifting right it'll start and all that but its not shifting the coil or modual went bad and we replaced them then we put the distributer back on and the timing was off HELP!!!!

4 speed auto? Check the linkage from the transmission to the throttle body. See if the plastic clip broke that holds the linkage to the throttle body.

Where is the shift linage located on an 1985 toyota 4x4 pickup truck? I still cant shift into gear from thje last support you gave me

Without seeing the problem myself, it sounds like you have a clutch problem. It could be the linkage but sounds like the clutch. A manual transmission's linkage is located on the top. It can be reached from the inside of the vehicle through the floorboard. The linkage is attached to the lower end of the gear shift and enters the top side of the transmission. A vehicle repair manual may be helpful, Haynes and Chilton are good ones. Good luck

1992 Volvo 240 GL = shift problems

It sounds like linkage to me as well - jack car block to prevent fall and block tire - do on flat ground and track cable under car. I think you should start under hood where linkage joins transmission. I seem to recall a plate there to hold at this end . not that it is a yoke type movement in transmission. this must be always lubricated. Did you ever have car jump out of gear? was it ever stiff to shift and has car been sitting?

1989 Volvo 760 turbo problems

You need an impulse sender that is located in the distributor. It is easier to get a used one from a wrecking yard and install the whole distributor. Am I right in assuming your rpm gauge is fluctuating up and down rapidly?
On your transmission problem, you can try cleaning the overdrive solenoid located on the back of the bell housing near the main linkage. Sometimes that helps with the delayed shifting problems.
