Yes, same with me. It is the alternator. You probably are noticing your dash lights and heat/ac blower is weaker also. Get that fixed right away or you will be stranded. It cost around $550. Get your alternator at Auto Zone, its cheaper. Try to get a rebuilt. My mechanic said that when he pulled it in the garage it started a small fire.

Battery light idling and burning smell from alternator

Could have a bad alternator and that is why the light is going on. Easiest way to check for proper charging is to measure the voltage of car while it is not running. Should get a nice strong 12 to 12.5 volt reading. Now start the car and take the measurement. If alternator and regulator are working the voltage should not read around 14 or more volts.

I have a 84 d15 dodge. the battery won't hold a

Sounds as if you have a short draining the battery overnight. Take the battery negative off and run a 12volt test light between the terminal and the ground post on the battery. leave the key out of the ignition switch. see if there is a dim or bright light glowing in the test light. If either one is the case start pulling out your fuses and watching the light until the light goes out. When it goes out y have identified the circuit your short is in. ( headlamps, door switches, ect. ) Make sure to put each fuse back in the proper place so as not to burn anything up!!!!. By the way , you did NOT keep the positive battery terminal off to see if the alternator was charging did you? If you did you just burned up your new alternator, which by the way will give your battery a direct short to ground through the diode trio in the alternator, thus causing the battery to very quickly drain. and Why should you have to jump start a NEW battery? Check to see if you are lucky enough to have a charging fuse, if you did the positive off while running thing that fuse could save you if you have it.

Battery Light still on

The new alternator is probably ok.
I would say you burned a fuseable link in the wiring harness.
The alternator has a fuse wire between it and the battery to protect it from overload.
Have someone check the wires coming out of the back of the alternator. The big wire should have battery voltage, the small wires energize the alternator when you start the engine.

The car was running fine one day then the next day it would not start. We tried jumping it thinking the battery might be dead and it still would niot start. The car has power until we take the jumper...

Sounds like you have a toasted battery or alternator. Have you performed a load test on the battery? Have you tried to charge the battery? First remove the battery and charge it externally from the vehicle. If the battery won't hold a charge, or won't hold a charge of 12 volts, replace it. Once you have the vehicle started, test the operation of the alternator. It should be putting out at least 13 volts back to the battery to keep it charged - if it is putting less than 13 volts or more than 16 volts, replace the alternator.

Battery light won't come when car starts up in my

could be the light is burned out, Mine did, and it gave me fits!! Do this to be sure, have the battery LOAD tested, that way your sure it not only has 12 volts showing, but also the correct amps being stored,, once your sure the battery is fully charged and ok,, start the car,, with a multi meter, check the posts,, you should be getting a reading of between 13.5 -14.5 volts dc,, if you get that your alternator is doing its job,

My truck had a vaccum belt burning smell, I replaced the fan belt and the idler pulley as recommended by parts store to fix problem. I tried to replace tension pulley also but could not get bolt loose to...

sounds like your alternator. you can pull of and have tested for free at most parts stores. batteries should be ok. it is best to charge them and not just crank up and let vehicle charge them from completly dead this will cause an extreme pull on the charging system and can damage alternator again

1993 mazda 626 LX 2.0L. Smelled burning smell for about 10 seconds, then overheating began. No heat coming from heater, and Charge light; all happen at same time. Also, rear light came on too. Thought it...

Sounds like you have burned a belt off the pulley for the alternator and water pump. Dont drive the car until you have verified the belt is intact and the water pump is turning. Something had to have caused it if it did, I would suspect water pump, alternator, or air conditioning compressor has siezed if your car is equipped with it.

Engine whistling when cold in morning

Your alternator is drawing alot of power trying to charge the battery.Try tightening the belt. That should fix your problem..The reason the alternator is whistling so much on cold starts is because thats when it takes the most power from the battery to start the car.And the noise from the alternator is it charging it back up..So I'd try tighting the belt that will fix the smell and watch for the battery light or alternator light in the dash come on the could be your alternator failing and you dont want that to happen..I hope this helps you fix the problem.Have a great day...

This morn a burning like smell came through the heater and the batt. light came on ,i opened hood and smell was coming from what seemed to be alternator

you probably had one of the diodes in the alternator burn out...go to auto parts store and have them test the charging system or use a multimeter if you have one, normal, engine running voltage should be around 14 volts, if below 12.6 the alt. is not charging and needs replacing. Enjoy

1997 nissan sentra serpentine belt

The serpentine belt has nothing to do with the brakes. It does have something to do with the alternator which charges the battery. the burning smell is probably the result of wasted grooves on the underside of the belt. it is the belt you see just inside the car engine compartment that turns the AC unit compressor pully , the alternator, etc.it is connected to the crankshaft pully.. If you have a front wheel drive it is located on the side of the engine compartment.
