Question about 1999 Saab 9-5

1 Answer

Check Engine light

I have a 1999 Saab 9-5 SE, 3.0 litre V6 turbo. Bought it about 6 weeks ago, has been perfect until:
Went into town, parked, shopped, returned to car ~30 mins later, car would not start. Tried 3 or 4 times, it was just turning over & not firing.
Called RAC, 2 hours later he arrived & asked to hear what it sounded like when trying to start it. It of course fired up & ran, but the Check Engine light stayed on.
THe RAC man said he would follow me home, I got about 1/2 mile & it conked out dead. He towed me to a car park & started fiddling. He connected his diagnostic machine, but could find no fault, checked under the bonnet with a voltmeter, all ok. He started pulling out fuses, they were all ok, but whilst doing so, the check engine light went out, and the check gearbox light came on!

He ran out of ideas, couldnt get through to his technical helpline so tried again to follow me home. All was well, drove about 4 miles home, performance normal.

Got home, parked up, turned off. RAC man said try it again, it fired up all ok with no warning lights on.
That was about a week ago, have not used it since, but still no warning lights on.

Any ideas, is this a common fault etc etc, any help or background info would be appreciated! thanks

Oh, and while the RAC man was fiddling with it in the car park, it would run ok...

I was away at work for a couple of weeks - came back & tried the car again, it ran fine - took it out for a spin & after about 5 miles or so it just cut out while I was driving.
Check engine light was on again, would not start.
I pulled out the engine management fuses to reset them, but it made no difference.

I walked home, cam back 3 hours later when it was cold & this time it ran fine & I took it home....
Anyone have any idea's why it will cold start but cut out/not start when hot?

I did realise this is an electrical fault by the way!

It sound like you are having a electrical problem. You need to check your electrical/ignition system, not all electrical problem the diagnostic machine can read.

I have a 1997 Saab se turbo 2.0 the check gearbox light comes on then a week or so later will go out any help would be great thanks keith

Check engine and check gearbox on an automatic...neutral safety switch is going out. First couple starts like that and it seems like it's in limp home is. A few more starts and it will reset itself. Mine did so reliably at the 5th restart until I changed it.

Get a used on if you can, they are not really rebuildable reliably. Pain to change, it's under the battery tray and miserable to get to.

I just bought a 1999 Saab 9-5 v6 and the check engine light came on yesterday and today on the way home from work my dash lights went out?????

Hi, this sounds like a voltage issue to me. Did all the lights go out on the dash, including the check engine light. Your best bet is to get the fault codes read at a local garage (not the main dealer unless you have money to burn). They should be able to give you indication of what caused the light to come on and you can take it from there.

1999 Saab 9-5 SE

I own a  99' 9-5 V6 turbo SE.  Had the same thing.  Started smelling gas in the car, sometimes.  Instead of not starting it died (as in the engine stopped) on a barren stretch of road at night.  Towed to the Saab dealer: Conclusion?  Replaced the fuel pump and sending unit. Don't ask how much.
