94 chevy 4.3 v6 converted to carb going in 95 dodge dakota. Can someone help me with the installation of an hei distributor/coil? I know how to install and time the distributor, and I have the coil wired to the distributor. My question is, do I have to run leads from the battery to the coil or to the distributor or do I have to run anything from the battery at all? There's three wires on the distributor that aren't hooked up to anything, but the other wire is hooked up to the coil. I'm doing an engine swap and converting it to carbureted, so I'm starting from scratch here. I'm using parts for a 1985 carbureted 4.3 v6. Someone please help me, I've just never done this before

SOURCE: need wireing diagram to change 72 nova over to hei distributor

Hey , just take the positive wire from the coil you are removing and feed it to the + terminal on the HEI dist. cap.the other terminal under there is for your tachometer. If you are mounting a master kill switch in the bumper for drag racing- attatch the kill wire to the tach terminal also.
Thats it you just plug the three wire pigtail from the dist. base(pickup) to the cap and you are off.
Remember firing order is 18436572 in a clockwise direction. to find #1 remove #1 plug and have someone"bump" the engine over while holding your finger over the hole-carefull. then line up the slotted mark on the crank pulley with the big notch on the timing indicator. Good luck

SOURCE: HEI Coil is burning out

If the Electrical system is grounding out, particularly the hot lead to the coil. then you will fry coils. Check your Positive leads at the fuse box for continuity to ground. 1st check the ignition wire i.e. red wire going to your coil. Disconnect the ignition wire from the coil or distributor (depending where your coil is located). If it has continuity to ground, then go to your fuse box and pull out all your fuses and test each terminal for continuity to ground until you find which circuit is grounding out and polluting the rest of the positive circuitry. If it is only the ignition hot wire then you know that is where the problem is. If it is coming into the fuse block from another positive source, isolate that source by not allowing it to come into contact with + current.

How do i install a tach in my 94 cavalier rs 2.2L 4-cylinder? I cant find wire the singal wire goes and i can find any info about it.

Didn't find the right year, but reasonably sure the '94 Chevy HEI is nearly identical to following...

You will need the connector/wire that fits into the HEI distributor. It would normally be included in the tach install kit that I assume you don't have.

I have a 89 chevy 4.3 v6 that I put in m 95 jeep wrangler . it has new water pump new 3 core aluminum radiator new hoses it wants to run hot up around the 240 range I have changed the thermostat to a 180...

If you are sure you have normal coolant flow thru the radiator, the only thing you mentioned that might be different is the manifold. Its possible you don't have all of the water jacket outlets matching the passages in the intake for cross flow.

Wiring for a small block 350

need to know if its a HEI cap and rotor or not. HEI caps have the coil built into them , an all in one ignition as compared to a external cylindrical coil.
you need to know that. either the distributor cap is a huge hurken thing (HEI) or it has an external coil somewhere or the cap has a ninth distributor hole in the middle of the cap to put a coil. wire.
after you figure out which one it is then you have to either go to www.autozone.com and study chevy wiring or buy a haynes manual for the similar vintage engine. for the external coil I would try a chilton manual for a chev truck before 1972. for HEI anytime thereafter. I may be off by a few years on the age of the engine. but hopefully you got an idea of what to do, or just google chev engine wiring? and study away.
good luck

Need to know the firing order

For all Dodge V8 truck engines, the firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. For all Dodge V6 truck engines, the firing order is 1-6-5-4-3-2. For Dodge inline 6 cylinder engines, the firing order is For all Dodge 4 cylinder engines, the firing order is 1-3-4-2 All dodge distributors rotate clockwise.

look at your distributor cap while standing on the driver's side of the vehicle.
Start at number 1, which is labelled on the cap, and go
clockwise

Hei distributor on old L6 engiune won't fire coil

'56 engine was likely a "blue flame" engine that had a points type ignition system. If someone installed a HEI setup in there, you need to know what year vehicle it came from. The old system used a hot wire from the ignition switch to the (+) side of an external coil...the (-) lead went to the points. The most common conversion uses the same (+) wire but it then connects to the "batt" terminal on the distributor cap.(coil is inside) There are no other wires involved except for the short harness that goes directly into the distributor that connects the coil, pickup coil and control module to each other..
