Question about 1998 GMC Sierra

2 Answers

Same thing here...

I have a 1998 GMC Sierra 1500 Vortec 4.3L, etc. I had to replace the fuel pump a while back (changed filter also, etc), drove fine for a week and then went out again. Replaced the fuel pump once again and drove fine for a week or so and then it would it suddenly started stalling after driving for a few minutes. I had to let it sit for about 15-20 minutes and then it would start finally, but once again only allowed me to drive a few minutes and the it would repeat. Problem started about 50 miles from home so it took me about 4 or 5 stalls, wait, start, go, stalls, etc before i made it home. How did you finally correct your problem?

over a few weeks the engine sometimes stalled while coasting in traffic; would start again; then after going a short distance and turning car off for a few minutes it started hard; then on way home there was a knock like sound and it stalled with a pop and will not start again. Changed the fuel filter , will crank but not fire

Sounds like a restriction some where in your fuel system example dirt or anything that might get in your system check your filter and look for contamiation or possilbly a airation problem

SOURCE: Stalling

Possibly faulty ignition module is the problem, stalls when engine is hot when you sit for a while it cools off and runs again until it heats up again, those are usually the symptoms of a bad ignition module and after a while it may give out all together and not run at all, usually if the module is at fault it shuts down the fuel pump so the engine don't load up with fuel, do to when engine continuously cranks over the injectors never stop squirting fuel and flood the engine do to lack of spark which is produced by the module, this could possibly be your problem.

What should the fuel pressure read on a 1998 gmc z71 5.7 vortec

sounds like your fuel pump, should be 50-55psi fuel pressure, if you don't have a gage, you could check the schrader valve on the rail with screw driver, watch out if it's pressurized it could squirt in your eye's if it shoot's out really strong, chances are it's working, but if it just does little squirt or dribble, then check it out electrically, fuse, relay etc:before you drop the tank, or like some people do take box bolts out and lift box back and it's easier to change pump then.good luck and any other questions feel free to ask me

1998 GMC Sierra 2500 5.7L hard cold starts last month, now won't start cold w/o a little carb cleaner in intake. Codes for oxy sensors, mass air sensor and crank/cam position. Drove today, no power just...

starting definately has a lot to do with the crank/cam position sensors, but it wouldnt have nothing to do with hot or cold weather, oxygen sensor will make the vehicle run too rich if its out, you will smell fuel very strong out the exhaust, that could make it run sluggish also, and usually if the mass air flow sensor goes out the vehicle wont start at all...

1996 GMC 1500 truck, Vortec 6 cylinder. Will not start after being turned off for a few hours. Engine turns but won't catch. When I spray some starter fluid in the air filter line to the carb, it will...

I would lean towards the fuel pump, but... How dirty was the old filter??? if it was bad then the new one may have picked up whatever was left in the line. I guess I would go the easy route, replace the fuel filter, this time with the filter off crank the truck and catch the fuel in a mason jar til it is clean, you may need to drain the tank and try to clean it out if it is real dirty. Hope this helped Tim
