I still think this is a timing problem, most likely with the crankshaft sensor. However, it could also be in the throttle positioning sensor, since you had raised the idle to get it to work momentarily. Also, the mass air flow sensor cannot be ruled out entirely. I would start with the crank sensor, then the throttle positioning sensor. Try these and let me know.

The throttle positioning sensor is located on the throttle body where the throtle cables connect. The crank sensor will be on the block below the heads, I'm exactly sure of the exact location on these, but the service dept at your local dealer can tell you.

Just got a1986 300zx starts with a push button start runs ruff when driving unless I turn the key to the start position run normal for a few then starts to backfire. Any idea what

Since you are a DIYer, I highly recommend you invest in a repair manual from your favorite parts store, or barrow from library, or
try filepeep.com if they have it, or manualslib.com
DIY auto salvage yards have an interchange terminal. You can search Ebay for the replacement part and it will show all models the part will fit. Backfire, Timeing some where. Either spark system or more likely Valve. Or the Air mass meter is bad. I had a bad one and it ran terrible.

Text from Nissan service manual troubleshooting section:
Step 1: Check to insure battery is 100% check voltage output. Should be up there at least 10 volts.

Step 2: Check starter

The guide continues, but one of these is your problem if your engine and system run fine after engine start.

The timing is off, hence, the backfiring. This could be the crank shaft sensor, coil packs, or the timing belt has slipped.
