My 1995 Toyota Avalon transmission has went bad, but have not had any previous problems. My power steering has been leaking and i have a loose battery cable. While driving my car one day it act as if it did not want to go when i press the gas, then will kick into gear. I drove it the next day it drove fine the following morning i was driven and stopped at light, gave the car gas the motor wanted to go but the car would go forword. But it drove fine in reverse could this be a simple fix or do i need to get a new transmission. the car has 250,000 miles on it.

I would sadly have to say that it is probably worn out but before you put a new one or a used one in i would at least put a trans gauge on it and check the fluid pressure at the trans or at least pull the pan and see how much metal is in the pan and on the magnets in the pan.........if there is a lot of metal i would replace and flush the system........i hope this was helpful and if i can help in any other way let me know.......let me and fixya know if this was helpful and a thumbs up would be appreciated.........thanks and have a blessed day........

1995 celica 2.2L doesn't engage gear 2,4,r

are you saying this car is a A/T car, AUTO and not a stick?

say so, as both have 2,4 and reverse gears.

i think its a 5speed manual.

so the tip of the shifter is bad, remove it see plastic parts bad.

you could shift car , by moving the transmission levers and id bet it does work so that leaves. bad shift lever parts.

i bet the lever is real loose , so loose the H pattern is garbage

If there is a leak in the power steering and makes this rattle sound, does that mean they need to replace the power steering pump? how do you fix a leak? for the 97 toyota avalon. The power steering...

If power steering pump is leaking your options are: replace w/new or rebuilt or have yours rebuilt.
They make stop leak for pwr steering units but it's a very temporary fix. In answer to "driving it" - it's at your own risk - if it locks up then there's possibility of an accident. I'd get it fixed and be done w/the worries. Have a reputable shop look at it and give you an estimate.

Turning to the left hearing a rattle noise in the 97 toyota avalon ...went to the shop and they changed the power steering fluid and that was good for awhile ...but restarted the car and have the same...

If that rattle sound more like a whining the problem is a leak, that is why the problem went away when they replace the power steering fluid.

Leaking power steering pump

Yes Mistydogg, the solution posted here is absolutely correct. And be sure to remove (as much as possible) of the factory power steering fluid from the reservoir and replace with automatic transmission fluid (ATF). Do this a few times during regular oil changing intervals to cycle-out the original factory fluid. The 1995 Camry was shipped from the factory with clear/typical power steering fluid, however (strangely) the factory service manual calls for replacing with automatic steering fluid. Well, it's actually not so strange. ATF has a seal swelling effect that will stop the leaking within your entire power steering system - fast. I ran into the same problem in a big way. The dealer wanted to replace my pump and rack at 50k miles at the remanufactured parts plus labor price of $1,200. I am leak-free today on my same pump and rack at 241k miles having switched over to ATF. Enjoy your great car!
