I have similar problem with my 2000. It has been feeling like it is 'slipping' every once in a while and today all the gear lights lit up and it stahled for a minute.

The previous post is untrue! MFA means MultiFunktions Ansiege (pronounced AAN-zeeguh).
This is a German- Americanism for Multi-Function Indicator.

The MFA displays the time, time driven since the ignition was started, miles driven since the ignition was started (trip miles are displayed under the odometer), miles per gallon, average miles per gallon, and outside temperature. I think that's it. If you click the little button on the underside the wiper switch, you can toggle between 2 different trackings. If you HOLD that button, you can re-set the avg. mpg's (but not the current mpg's, they are calculated every 30 yards), time driven, miles driven. Contrary to the previous poster's solution, it does not actually indicate anything is wrong with your car! (but they were right about scrolling through the indications with the side rocker switch) the malfunction indicator is on the cluster, it is a little engine block with a lightning bolt through it. It usually means you need an oil change. If it blinks, you have a catalytic converter problem. Hope this helps.

On a 1999 volkswagen passat v6 is the clock and odometer supposed to stay on 24/7?

Yes. Not illuminated though. It's a minimal amount of power.

Please show me the exact please of the fuse box for a passat 1999 v6

At the end of the dash beside the stearing wheel (the bit that the driver's door covers when its closed) there's a small panel that you can just pull off. You will find fuses in here. (For left hand drive possibly other end of dash I don't know)

Where can I download a vw passat handbook for a 1999 estate model

I don't know where there is one. I tried looking for one for a long time until I eventually just went and bought a haynes manual. they really are worth the money considering what you save. Also, if you're doing a big job you'll want to have the book there beside you, rather than on your computer. I recommend biting the bullet and getting a hard-copy.

I have just has a friend service my 1998 R Plate VW Passat 1.9 TDi and now need to reset the service indicator. Can anyone help. Regards, Darren James

With the Ignition Turned off, Look on the instrument display, Hold the right trip button. While holding the button Turn ignition on. The display read service, While still holding the trip button turn the left clock adjustment arm to the right or if you were adjusting the minutes on the clock, Release both then turn ignition off then on. I have used this trick myself. Hope this helps. Mugshot Collection
