Question about 1990 Ford F150

1 Answer

Power may not be a major issue, but my 90 F150 4.9 straight six 5 speed seems to lack power. 5th gear is useless unless you catch it at about 55-60mph on a flat road. in general the truck seems like it lacks power

How long have you had the F-150? Has it always seemed to be short on power, or is this something new? I suspect it's the engine (need for 2 more cylinders!) I have a 90 F-250, 5.8 V-8, and I think it's lacking power if I tow or put anything in the bed. Fine when it's empty! 5th gear sounds normal, it's really only meant for cruising on the highway, and flat at that. Maybe we should compare gas bills, you might like that 6 cyl a little more. countrycurt0

When is the last time the 150 was tuned? If it's been a while, maybe that would increase your power a bit. Filters too. countrycurt0

Lack of power in 5th and 6th gear at cruising speed, have to downshift and go through gears to obtain higher speed

4th and 5th gears are for use over 45 and 55mph respectively as they are both Overdrive Gears.

If you are above these speeds in these gears when the issue occurs I would suspect Tune-up issues, fuel/air delivery problems, or a drastic change in tire/ wheel size on the vehicle.

Last tune up was?
Air Filter?
Fuel filter?
Checked fuel pressure and volume?

1994 ford ranger 5 speed clutch pedal started acting almost loose in 5th on interstate and the gear all the sudden isnt catching and its reving the engine when gas is pressed so i dont wanna blow the

If it has the hydraulic clutch master cylinder, check the fluid level. Smoke could be from leaking line or blown slave cylinder.
Get under there and see what is leaking.

89 ford festiva l wont go into 5th gear how do i fix it

88 - 89 festiva "L" models came with a 4 speed. Unless it has been swapped with a 5 speed from an 88 - 89 "LX" or a 90 - 93 festiva 4 gears is all you have. Everything you ever wanted to know about your festiva can be found a fordfestiva.com. I've seen 8 festivas with 500,000 miles now. They are bullet proof and big time fun. Easy to work on too. And most owners are really down to earth because we don't care what people think of us. Festivas are also easy and cheap to make very fast. Get on the forum. We will welcome you!

Should my 4cyl 90 wrangler have a fifth gear

If your shift pattern printed on the handle shows a 5th position then likely you have 5th gear. Unless someone along the way swapped for a four speed and somehow used the original shift lever. There should be an ID number on the unit itself that will tell you what yours is. Also the VIN# on the vehicle itself will tell you what was originally in there. (dealer can look it up for you)

Lack o fpower

Any check engine lights? If not could still be just a Mass Air flow running on minimum and won't make the Check engine come on or something more major like the wastegate valve on the turbo, and or the vacuum or or the vanes in the turbo seizing.
Any odd noises like air flowing could be a disconnected turbo pipe also.
You can try unplugging the mass air flow sensor and try it like that. If it runs better (not perfect) it could be just that. If it does let me know and I'll tell you what to do.
