2005 Monte Carlo Rattles

When I step on the gas there is a rattling, scratching noise. Is it the muffler? Does it need tightening or something? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Bree

Thanks, I'll try that! I'm in NY, so I'm sure they'll try to charge me more, (especially since I'm a female) so I'll make sure now! Thanks so much! I'll be posting one more question, also......

It is most likely one of the heat shields on the exhaust (pipe, muffler, catalytic convertor) has a broken spot weld, take it to a muffler shop, many times they don't even charge to fix the issue, if they do it will be less than $20.00

Check your cattalic convert inside comb have come loose if so need to replace the unit and check muffler for noise matterial from convertor may also gone into muffler but maybe its only muffler or maybe only convertor. Another posibility check A/c clutch assembly maybe is coming apart or sloppy and likes to ring bells sound like.Turn on Ac if you have if the nosie is gone then you need a clutch assembly for your AC

How at fix a sqeaky muffler

if you stilll have heat sheilds around the exhaust system then check then for looseness as these will cause a squeak or rattle noise.you can try to tighten the sheilds or remove them.their purpose is to help keep the exhaust cool.if its a small pin hole in the exhaust it can cause a sound like you have.you will have to find the hole and if the system is not rotted weld the hole closed.if the system is no good then replace the bad part.if the noise is from the inside the muffler you can try to dent the muffler were you here the noise to try to stop it or just replace the muffler.

Hi there i have a 2003 honda civic si when ever i am sitting idle there is a rattle / clanking sound coming from under the car it is coming from the front in the center when it makes the noise and i look...

You could have a loose bolt on your exhaust manifold (this happens sometimes with Japanese cars with little reason behind it). If you can, try tightening all of the bolts on the manifold and see if that helps. If you are not very mechanically inclined and tightening the bolts does not totally resolve the issue, I recommend taking it to a mechanic -- just mention that you think it is the exhaust manifold, or the exhaust manifold seal. If the seal is worn out, you should have it replaced and that should resolve your issue.
The reason it only happens at idle is that the engine has a specific vibration to it at low RPM's ... this is a different vibration than when driving ... stepping on the gas also increases the pressure in the exhaust system, minimizing the vibrations. You should be able to get it fixed for a pretty low price, but I would recommend doing it soon so you do not allow collateral damage to the rest of your exhaust system.

Rattling sound from the exhaust

The metal shielding around your catalytic converter could be rattling or the rubber donut that holds the rear tailpipe could be bad. When your car is cold shake your tailpipe and see if you can reproduce the noise. If you can your tailpipe donut is likely bad. Three dollars at any auto parts store. If it does rattle when you shake your tailpipe then the heat shield for your convert could be loose. You need to tighten it up another piece of metal between it and the converter to keep it from rattling. If you hear the rattle when you go over bumps too then your exhuast is probably, loose. Crawl under there and stake shaking things, I am sure you'll find the problem

sounds like you have something loose first track were the noise is coming from and inspect the area for loose componets if it is coming from your motor then you might need a mechanic to check it out could be something loose in there

Loud noise when press on the gas

see if te noise is there when stationary. if so hold the revs around 1500 to 2000 rpm if it rattles around that, then it is the heat sheild on the down pipe section thats broken free.

My muffler is rattling against the exhaust pan(?). Is there anything I can put inbetween to stop the noise?

You need to find out why it is rattling. Something is broken, come loose, or bent. Have it fixed as that is not the way it was designed.

Rattling noise when applying gas, sometimes when idling in park.Maybe muffler/drivetrain vibrations No noise cruising

You just might not hear the noise when it is at speed or the engine vibrations are not at the right frequency to cause the resonance.
I'd check the heat shield around the catalytic convertor; they are notorious for doing this and we have one rattling currently too!
