Question about 1999 Ford Escort

Timing belt? fuel filter?

I actually have a 2000 model. I have been having some surges and sputtering when I would push the gas. I assumed there was trash in the lines or tank as I tend to run the fuel way too low at times. I put in some gas treatment, filled up and made it about 5 miles when the engine suddenly died while driving. I managed to pull over and the car will not start. When I turn the key over it gives the impression of being out of gas. Help!

    Every other moring i come outside to start my car it wont start until i get under hood and play with the engine such as the battery cable conector and some times it works what would be my probem i think i might have a short in the electrical system i dont know what to do should i get a new battery .

Running the tank low (below 1/4) on fuel ruins the fuel pump, it uses tthe gas around it to cool it down, most likely you will need a new fuel pump.

Could be that's exactly the problem. I'd check the fuel filter first, cars with fuel filter problems often only exhibit problems like this by saying they can only go Xmph, and not over. While the filter may not be clogged enough to keep the car from running, a 13 year old car can through condensation develop rust in the tank, which could not only foul the filter, but foul it continuously after replacement. I once solved the problem with my motorhome by introducing a huge cannister filter, with a magnet to trap the rust, and a smaller fine filter just before the carburetor so I could tell the gas was flowing and the big cannister needed replacing if the flow diminished.

Other problems that may cause the same issue are timing problems, though most of those have gone the way of old spark gaps, and timing belts that need adjustment. But, if your car's timing works like the older cars, having the timing retarded or advanced could change the cycle just enough that it doesn't want to run right, the fuel just doesn't get enough time to burn completely, or begins to foul the plugs.

Another more modern problem is the coil, while capable of producing enough spark at low speeds, low rpm and therefore low gasoline consumption, boost the rpm, the speed, and push down on the gas and suddenly there's not enough juice to burn all of the gas, and the car coughs, sputters and behaves like it has no power.

Go to the auto parts and get a container of Heat fuel treatment and get a new fuel filter also. Then pour in the proper amount of fuel treatment and change the fuel filter. This should fix your problem. Also when was the last time you changed the air filter. This would help it run better and increase your mileage.

Replaced battery, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter, fuel filter, added heet water removal and lucas fuel injector. It sputters, backfires/pops when accelerating and it has no power, drives like a golf...

How many miles? I am NOT a mechanic! Sounds like possible timing belt/chain jumped a tooth. Or the timing advance mechanism is malfuctioning. (Unlikely - check distributor is tight or not shifted from normal position too far back or forward.) Assuming belt and not chain, 80 k miles or more, likely need to replace timing belt in any case, before it breaks. If it breaks, you'll be replacing valves and pistons too.

Engine is sputtering, no power when push on gas. What could be wrong? Fuel filter?

It might be the fuel filter, if not, you might check out the catalytic converter

2001 Accent stick shift sputters in low gears and at high speed.

I suspect the timing is off since timing belt replacement was mentioned. The altitude would be read by the various sensors in the engine and computer and would be compensated accordingly.

Could possible be a bad or stuck vaccum advantace mechanism. Check for operation.

Hi! I had the same problem with my 88 2.8 Ltr. Had dirty fuel Injectors. Put in fuel Inj. cleaner in gas tank, after a couple of days, runs like a dream,no more problems. Give it a try. Take care,Leo B.
