The timing is off, hence, the backfiring. This could be the crank shaft sensor, coil packs, or the timing belt has slipped.

Wow it could be a couple of things, First do you have MAP, throttle position, sensors? After it back fires do you smell anything, gas, rotten eggs? Is your check engine light comes on when the car dose start? and how was the car running just before this? or was it one day you jumped in her it no start? Right now I don't think its your fuel pump, need to get more info. I can give you how to check the fuel pump later.

Taurus 96, electrical problem, clicking sound, engine cranks

close, there is an emergeny fuel shutoff switch hidden in the trunk of these things burried under the carpeting, you probably have something resting on it OR water got on it and is shorting it out, my friend had a 92 taurus 3L and the switch was in the trunk, 14 inches off the trunk floor on the drivers side wall, should be a small **** in the carpeting you can push your finger through and feel it.

96 Continental radio, no audio

I have the SAME EXACT problem. I thought it was the radio - bought another - went to change the units - heard an electrical arc - now the car cranks but doesn't start and the new radio doesn't work either!!! (not that it matters anyway)

check items in your fuel lines first, filter, pressure regulator....could be anything running down that line, don't waste your money on a fuel pump until it's the last option

Lifter pecking

as old as the car is...I'm not surprised.   You have a sticking or worn hydraulic lifter.  You my try an engine flush followed by a oil change. Or totally ignore it.  Is your oil pressure good?
