Question about 1996 Toyota Previa

Catalitic converter My check engine light came on and when I had it checked by a certified toyota mechanic, he said it was the cat. converter. cost: $1148. does this sound right? I cannot get it to pass emission test with light on but it is a 96 and concerned about adding more money to a wonderful car that has 165,000 miles. any advice?

I hate to say this, but what they told you seems to be correct. The catalytic converter is somewhat expensive for this vehicle because an O.E. converter must be used. If you were to install an aftermarket converter on this vehice, it would still not pass the emission's test. Furthermore replacing the oxygen sensor along with it is the only way to go. Hope this helps.

My Toyota Camry LE 1994 engine dies while I'm driving

is it sputtering before it dies like it is choking? if so then check your catalitic converter it might be clogged and not letting the exhaust out of the engine. another posibility is your fuel pump is going bad, that one is a little harder to do since you have to drop the gas tank, so check your cat first and go from there. If you have a welded exhaust that sucks a little but just go to an advanced auto parts and get the slip clamps to attach it back together and cut it right before and after the cat. If you dont know what size clamps you can measure the outer diameter of the pipe and then the inner diameter of the clamp needs to match that if your confused ask the guys at advanced auto for some help there usually pretty goood and can get you the right stuff. youll know if the cat is plugged when you look inside it you should be able to see light coming through atleast a little if not its prob clogged and that should fix your problem

2002 Toyota Rav4....check engine light""is

Here are two of the most common causes of the check engine light.

Most common, MAF ( mass air flow ), sensor. A faulty MAF prevents the computer from determining the correct fuel/air mix ratio.

Oxygen sensor. ( front and rear, front meaning before the catalytic converter, rear meaning after the catalitic converter. The front measures the fuel/air mix being sent through the catalitic converter, the back measures the emmisions and lets the computer know if any fuel/air mix ratios need to be adjusted. Both of these can trigger the check engine light.

I hope this helps you.

2004 honda pilot drives great drive Light flashes stops after I.shut off cat

Usually when they flash as your driving, it is indicating that you are causing damage to your catalitic converter. You need to have this checked. converters for your car are expensive.

Engine light wont go off.

The catalitic converter is a mechanical device , it simply converts harmful emissions into water/vapour. The 02 sensor if faulty would put the engine management light on. If the 02 sensor has been faulty for sometime it could tell the ECU to supply the wrong amount of fuel to the engine which in turn would eventually damage the catalitic convertor. So you may have to change both in the end, but first I would check out the 02 sensor and replace if required.

P0420 is a cat code. Sometimes, you can replace the upstream & downstream air/fuel & O2 sensors, run some good fuel injection cleaner thru it, and that might fix the problem. If not, you may need to replace the cat. Note that the cat is covered under warranty for 8 yrs/80,000 miles. Toyota will replace it if it has gone bad, for free.
