Question about 1998 Ford F150 Regular Cab

1 Answer

My 1998 F-150 won't start.

When I turn the key, it clicks once then nothing.
When I try to jump it off, it clicks several times but not fire.
It's at my house and I don't want to pay $100 for a tow truck.

My 1998 f-150 was running fine until the temp dropped to -30 degrees (celsius or -20F). I went to start it two hours later and all I got was a click noise. I've changed the battery and still the same thing is happening. Is there a kill swich or relay that is causing a problem. About an hour prior to going out I had used the command start which was from the dealer when the vehicle was new and the truck started just fine.

Is it a v6? They have a common problem with hydrolic lock when coolant makes it past the intake or head gasket. Check if coolant level is down.

Several things. Ignition switch. Fuses. Wiring. What does it do when you turn the key to run, accessory, and start? What lights come on? Did you try turning the key on and jump starting the starter?

Car was rinning perfect. One day it would not start. there was nothing, no clicking ,bell and guages were working. Jump start was nothing. Installed a new battery there was nothing. Went bact back 2 hours...

It sounds like you have an issue with your PassLock security system. I had the same with my 2002 Impala. Key turns OK, but won't start, won't crank. Wait 20-30 minutes, and car starts normally. There is usually a clue from the Battery and Security lights.
The problem starting to happen once a month, and eventually 1-2 times a week.
There are several write-ups on this problem for several GM cars for 2000-2006(?). Search this website, and search the web.
The official solution is to replace the ignition switch. The best solution is to bypass the Pass Lock system. I went ahead and did a full bypass, which involves cutting wires and adding resistors to the ignition circuit. I have not had a problem since.

2007 chevy cobalt ls won't start battery good starter good turn key nothing no click nothing all lites work on dash and radio works jumped starter with screwdriver turns. Over but won't start...

Ignition relay or fuse could be the problem. When you turn the key to start do you hear a fuel pump kicking on and or do you have spark when you hot wire the starter (I know it's hard to check while trying to start it)? You can email me back and I might be able to pinpoint it more.

2003 pontiac sunfire, key in ignition nothing. tried jumping, nothing. Left for help, came back car started right up 4 or 5 times, Now nothing. Why? ty, Sue

Sounds like a short in the ignition switch. Next time it does it, try shaking and turning the steering wheel while you're turning the key to start. If this doesn't work, try cycling the switch on and off several times. Chances are, this is your problem.
