An inexpensive multimeter would be a good investment; they can be had for <$20 US and are accurate enough for any home use.
Checking across the terminals with one, you should see at least 13 volts or more at an idle and a maximum of ~ 14.3 volts at any RPM.
If you have a chain auto parts store nearby, such as Auto Zone, Advance Auto, Checker, Kragen, most all will check your alternator performance free.
