Car was running, ran into water that was too deep. Can't get the engine to turn over to blow out the water. Is it worth taking to a mechanic?

You will need to drain all fluids and pull plugs out. if it was not running when flooded you should be able to save. remove plugs and disable fuel/ignition system spin over to blow out the water in cylinders

usually when running engine sucks water into cylinders and water doesnt compress like air so locks up possibly bent a rod or valve you will have to pull plugs and spin over to get water out. with plugs out should be able to turn over

Likely either the starter or solenoid. Solenoid is a combination of relay and actuator, pushing the starter's gear into engagement with your flywheel.

Why is my starter not turning my engine?

Sounds like the bendix is stuck. When the starter motor spins, the inertia makes the gear that engages with the flywheel fly forward and engage. When you release the key the gear returns back to its at rest position. To fix it, remove the starter motor, flood the helical grooves with WD40 to clean it, then apply light machine oil like 3 in 1 and then wipe off an excess oil.

very good post, few like it.
this is the starter free spinning
the solenoids job is the engage the teeth the fly wheel (ring gear)

the pinon shaft in starter is dirty, clean it (easy fix)
bad starter solenoid. get a new starter , most solenoids cost more.
your suspisons are dead on.

My 1985 720 pickup with a z24 engine will seldom start when it is warm with the ignition switch. It will spin over very well but will not start. I can push it and it starts immediately. It seems as if...

When your engine is CRANKED the voltage/curent feed to the starter is very high that the IGNITION SYSTEM DOES NOT GET THE REQUIRED VOLTAGE.
When the car is pushed it will start immediately as the full voltage is applied on the coil for a good spark.
So you must check the battery, the battery terminals, the ground connections and the starter motor.
If the starter motor has worn out bushes/brushes/pinion then it will drain more current as the starter is turned.
Since there is no firing it is only evident that there will be flooding. So remove plugs and flush out before the engine is cranked.

You need a new starter bendix, or a whole starter. Best do it soon before you tear the teeth of the flex plate. Once you do that you have to pull the transmission to change it.

Starter makes weird noise dosent turn over

Starter drive not engaging fully . Sticky or worn, but don't think changing thermostat had anything to do with it. Try having starter drive inspected & lubed if possible , but you may end up with new starter.

2007 0-3 Florida flood damage

Dan-
I am here in Melbourne FL with you. I own and operate Strictly Saab and would be able to take a look at your 9-3 and any concerns you may have with flooding. From the flood, I ended up with foure vehicles which had their complete interiors removed and cleaned, some with mechanical issues, and some with strange electrical issues. Feel free to contact me at 321.432.2034. Have a nice week.
