Question about 1996 Subaru Legacy
1996 Subaru Legacy Automatic. Drove it to a store and as I parked it I felt a small lurch. Came back from the store and didn't get any power when I turned the key. Removed trim and depressed shift lock with screw driver. Dash lights turned on for a second. I turned off the car and then tried to start it again but no power anywhere. Tried to mess with shift lock again but nothing worked.
I later came back and jumped the car. Check engine light started blinking and engine would surge while idling. Power window was lowered but started small movements up and down depending on engine rpm. Car died and lost all power when I turned the headlights on. I jumped it again and drove home.
This morning I checked the battery and it looked good. I jumped the car 4 times but each time I would drive 5 feet and it would quit and all power was gone.
Last night I checked the battery and it was still good. I disconnected and then reconn ected both terminals and that brought the power back. When I turned the key the power went out again. I repeated the procedure but did not turn the key. Instead, I took off the knee bolster and tried to wiggle the wires under the dash to see if I could find the source since it seems to be related to the ignition. Nothing cut the power so I started it up and it worked fine except for the check engine light which was flashing that says I have a misfire condition. I drove the car 25 miles to work this morning and will be taking it to the dealer for a better inspection.
