Question about 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

Front Brakes Warped

I have about 95,000mi on my 2000 WJ and have had a problem off and on with warpage since i bought it in 2002 with 20,000mi. First time I turned my rotors and replaced my pads(organic). Second time I replaced my rotors and my pads(ceramic). Now after some research online, I'm about to replace my Teves calipers with Akebono, along with buying new rotors. I'm also aware of the overtightening of lug nuts, i've always hand tightened mine to 100ft/lbs. I just wanted to know if anyone has a better solution, or solved it in a different way, before i order these parts.

Sounds like you are on the right track. There is no real way of keeping this from happening and torqueing your lug nuts is the right thing to do as well.

2001 SL-1 disc brakes in front, drum brakes in back. When I apply the brakes it feels like my wheels are wobbling or out of round if that makes sense. The brakes have 26,000 miles on them.

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

As a first course of action I strongly suggest that you have the hub nut tightened. If it's loosen, it may shake even not braking. Very dangerous so please have it checked and tightened.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

When brakes applied the steering wheel shakes.

Your disc brake rotors are warped. Solution? Remove the disc brake rotors and have them turned on a brake lathe. Warpage comes from a hot disc brake rotor going through a puddle of water which causes the warpage. If you have a Parking Brake, get in a safe area and when stopping, ONLY apply the parking brake. If the steering wheel stops shaking...there's your problem...warped disc brake rotors.

Evaluting Brakes/Calipers and Rotors Front end shimmeys when applying brakes at all speeds...

the roiors are "warped" you could have them machined but the problem will come back and be worse due to thinner rotors. replace with new rotors.
and high quality brake pads. recomend the ceramic ones they are way more exspensive but last way longer, make less dust and noise and are able to better handle the heat produced by your driving situation. heat from exessive usage is what causes rotor warpage

Brakes are pulsing

new rotors, machine rotors or just a pad slap?
pulsing indicates warpage, is if felt in the steering wheel or the brake pedal? did you do front and rears?
is it drum or all wheel disc brakes?

When braking in my 2008 expedition it kind of lurches at the end. Why?

rotors may need machining for warpage. this will make it lurch for you if warped. warpage hwhen the brakes are used for quick stops and or if the brakes are near to be replaced

Brakes pulsing when applied, now abs light on dash

usually when it is pulsating in brake pedal, it is the front rotors that are warped. replace front rotors. the abs light does not have anything to do with reguler brakes. if abs is bad brakes will work ok.

1997 pontiac sunfire rotor warpage

rotors too warped to turn?this is usually a problem on sports cars. I would recommend drilled rotors, they cost more but may be cheaper in the long run.hard braking or towing can also cause this.

yes you do replace them both and have the new ones checked before you install them, alot of the cheap ones have been stacked and stored incorrectly causing warpage even before you get them, have a good day DB

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Front Brake Rotors warp within 3 months of replacement. Does not matter where I purchase rotors (NAPA, Dealer, etc.)Have used Ceramic and metallic pads, makes no difference.

actually i just recently found this out (to my dismay) you can't use an air wrench to tighten jeep wheels with disk breaks. it took me about 200 dollars in warped rotors to figure that one out. it's a hassle, but they dont warp if you use a breaker bar.
