Hi listen up I had the same problem with my 1998 Passat GLS I tried some many different things(disconected the battery ,delete code using the scan tool from autozone) but the only one that it work it was :

Yesterday I went to AMMCO Transmission specialist They ran the scanner in my car to get a codes (They did 3 times ) after that everything was working back to normal I'm so happy right now because I toght it was my transmission that ie went out but it was a short in the TCM but the computer store 3 codes (multi switch, TCM, hand brake failure) they deleting for me and they told me that nothing was wrong with the transmission but because use a TCM to change the gears (electronically) it was acting weird hopefully this solution it works for you (they did charge me anything I gonna buy a lunch for AAMMCO STAFF )

My vw beetle 2000 gear selection has issues, it shows neutral on dash board but D on gear lever shifter,D on dash board while shifter is on 3. What could be the problem? Thanks Chris.

Could be a mechanical issue if cable to transmission is loose. Has anyone worked on the transmission ? If so, cable might not of been properly aligned to actual transmission lever.

Chrysler town& country modle 1997 transmission cannot shift into L and 3

Could be a couple things. It could be that the transmission selector switch is bad,or is not making a good connection at the connector.Or,it could be in the steering column, that the selector/shifter control is broken.

My 2006 VW Passat will not turn over...

the sensor that tells the can bus what position the stick is in is located on the gearbox not on need to know what position that sensor is seeing the only way is with a more advanced diagnostic tool than just a fault reader.i would recomend vw dealer as passat electrical sytems can be a bit of a challenge when they go wrong and a dealer will be best placed to sort it for you.

Problems with a VW Passat 1998

It sound like your transmission in safe mode. meening it will stay in one gear tell you repair it(3 gear) thats why it moves very slow. you need inside repair . it could be the shiffting sensor or overhaul for the transmission.
