Question about 1983 Honda Prelude

Engine wont start

Car just died on me.Pulled the fuel feed-in tube to the carburretta and found no fuel coming in. Connected the pump direct to the battery and the pump pumps ok. Any suggestions as to what could be the problem? Many thanks.

I'd have to test when problem is ongoing. When you first turn on key, no crank, you should hear the pump run for a few seconds then stop. For initial prime, the computer doesn't need rpm signal. Engine cranking, the computer needs to see rpm signal or it won't ground the fuel pump relay. W/o rpm signal, no spark at the plugs and no fuel injector pulse. I know your talking about fuel, but, when problem is ongoing, check spark and fuel injector pulse, engine cranking.
Intermittent problems are a pain, have to test when problem is ongoing.

no idea where it is to be honest but on older cars like this the immobilisor only shuts off the fuel pump so it could be you have lost the chip out the key so try the spare key first ,the fuel pump relay i would suspect is under the bonnet in the power distribution box but which one?? i would need to connect my multi meter to the fuel pump connection with as long wire then using continuety test i would check all the relay connections till i found the other end of the fuel pump feed then i would know which relay it was then go from their

On some models, the Engine Control unit has a power supply relay. These relays some times get internal dry solder points. After driving for some time the the solder will get hot and separate. When it cools down it makes contact again. You will have to replace this relay or open it up and re- solder the solder joints. The relay is usually located on the main relay station in position 3. the relay station is located behind the right dash panel.[right hand drive vehicles]. You may need to refer to a manual for your specific model to find the exact location of the relay.

It starts and idles, but if the gas pedal suddenly push to full throdle the engine dies, and when it is put into gear the engine dies

sounds like a fuel feed problem check your fuel pump and your fuel lines.best way is to connect a line from a gas can directly to the fuel pump and put the line from your tank into the can to prevent spillage.then try to start and throttle engine. if it dies that means there could be an in line filter or the pump is bad.if it works then run the hose from the tank to the pump if it doesnt work then its the pump and filter in the tank. if it works then clean the lines between the tank and the pump or engine.

Have a look at your fuel sysytem which comprises of injector and fuel pump and the fuel hoses.

Good luck.
