Hi,
Most cars using a single serpentine drive belt will not accept any other belt. Usually you will have to replace the compressor or buy an aftermarket pulley unit to replace the pulley where the compressor is located. A smaller belt wont route correctly without rubbing on other components.

Hi,

Improve the Fixya.com experience for everyone by voting!

What you are looking for is called an 'air conditioner compressor bypass pulley'. Most chain auto parts stores have them in stock.

All you do is install the bypass pulley and use a shorter belt.

The only downside is the cost of $25-$40. That's about one-third the cost of a remanufactured unit and the labor is compatible.

All the best

Ben

2006 Pontiac Torrent. What size belt do I need if I bypass a/c compressor and idler pulley on it?

That's not the way that you do it. You remove the AC compressor and install a Bypass Pulley in its place. The belt and routing remain the same.

Can I bypass the ac compressor on my 2001 Pontiac Sunfire when replacing the serpentine belt?

We had a car that we had to bypass the compressor but my mechanic said we could not do it so he disconnected all the lines on the compressor and hooked it up that way. No we did not have air conditioning but we drove the car that way for several years after that.

The pully on the compressor is bad can i just leave off the compressor and bypass it with a different size belt

Yes. there are basically three ways:

1. Put in a new a/c compressor.

2. Try a smaller serpentine belt. If this model came also w/o a/c, that serpentine belt should work fine. If all Santa Fes came with a/c then like you were saying try a smaller belt. You might have to try different smaller belt sizes(as far as I know) until you really get it right, which is not easy.

3. See if they make an a/c compressor delete pully for your particular model. This is basically just a single standalone pully (dummy pully). Aftermarket companies do not make them for all models, but if they make it for yours, you can use the same serpentine belt w/o a compressor. The internet is the best place to check.

My compressor is bad and i was wanting to bypass the compressor with a smaller belt, what size belt do i need to get

There's probably no way to find a serpentine belt to by-pass the A/C compressor. However, the compressor only spins when the compressor clutch is engaged, and if you unplug the clutch the compressor pulley spins freely on its bearing without turning the compressor. The clutch wiring connector is usually on the compressor near the pulley.

Ac compressor going out on 2000 chevy impala. can you bypass w a smaller size serpentine belt?

don't believe there is a way if it's a 3.8. However ,just replacing the bearing on the compressor in not a big job, even if the compressor is bad the pulley will still spin.If the compressor itself is bad just unplug it.

1998 pontiac sunfire how do you bypass using ac pulley by using a different belt and what size belt would you use?

I would not suggest doing that at all. Most likely that pulley runs more than just the a/c clutch. You may burn up your motor doing that or it may not even run at all.

Bad a/c compressor. got a 82 inch belt like a different site suggested but the belt is the same size as the one i took off. needs to be shorter but i dont know how much. working on a 2004 taurus with tne...

Your going to have to install that belt and find out how much smaller you need it, then the parts store can lookm it up and give you the right belt, the stock belt size is 85.892 inches.see how much less you need, you dont have to be exact because it has the tensioner, with the belt on you will be able to see how much smaller and subtract it for the size i gave you, heres a napa belt # this is 1 1/2 inches smaller #25060840, heres one 6in smaller #25060790,just see how much smaller they will find the right belt, also they sell a bracket with a pulley that takes the place of the compressor but if you can bypass it then do so. hope this helps.
