Coolant Warning Light

I just replaced the water pump and the system seems to be working fine, but the coolant temp light still turns on for about 30 sec then shuts! I took the engine temp at about 215 at the thermostat. Do you have any idea what is wrong? Thanks

Replace the thermostat. When the water pump went bad, you over heated the car. Once over heated, thermostats are always no good. They operate on the expansion of a wax pellet, and overheated, some wax escapes. So it will never fully open again.

Some models have a bleeder valve located on or near the thermostat. Not all manuals will show this vital component. If yours has one( if your coolant recovery bottle is above highest point of radiator you do) you need to bleed the air out of your cooling system. Do this by opening the valve until coolant comes out. Do this a couple of times as your car is getting to operating temp. should solve your problem.

trapped air. When temp needle climbs to 1/4 way, loosen coolant temp sensor to bleed off trapped air in cylinder heads. Air is gone once coolant starts to stream out, but only open slightly at a time. May have to do in increments as trapped air will cause rapid overheat

Might be the water pump! Take it back and tell them they need to do it right.

Top up coolant with water

Water is fine since its warmer weather coolant is used mainly so it doesn't freeze as water would. You should be fine as long temps don't get below 32 degrees waters freezing point.

2000 vw beetle 2.0 L, low level coolant light...engine mil code 1256

not the pump but air in the system or a broken wire to the coolant level sensor
that sensor at the top of the radiator tank has to be completely immersed in coolant or the circuit is broken and the light comes on
same effect id the wire to that sensor is broken in the insulation

I have a 2002 325i BMW with 85K miles. It's had temp gauge problems for quite a while but until recently had no signs of real overheating. (I drive her only rarely though). The gauge would stay...

To verify if cooling system damage exists.
Drain the engine coolant.
Remove the intake manifold.
Remove the plastic heater core feed pipe.(located under the intake manifold).
If the coolant pipe cannot be removed after removing securing hardware, the VANOS banjo bolt must also be removed thus allowing additional clearance needed to remove the pipe.
Visually inspect the front (inside) of the coolant pipe.
If the plastic on the inside of the coolant pipe shows no signs of deterioration (smooth surface) the engine should be reassembled using new gaskets and O rings where necessary.
If the plastic on the inside of the coolant pipe shows signs of deteriorated (worn away, bubbling, ect) this is an indication that the engine has been severely overheated and these components must be replaced.....Cylinder head gasket, all coolant hoses, all plastic coolant pipes, coolant expansion tank and cap, radiator, water pump, thermostat, oil and filter....

Hope this is some help to you ??

Car overheated Iin November of 2010. Turned it off, cooled it down, added coolant - no further problems. Today, May of 2011, red warning light came on 10 minutes into drive. 50's outside temp. ...

Sounds like a bad water pump or radiator. Make sure the radiator fins arent clogged or inside of radiator, water pump not circulating the coolant properly will also cause overheating, old coolant will not properly dissipate heat efficiently and may need flushed. Also make sure the coolant has a 50% mix of water as the water does most of the cooling not the antifreeze. Hope this gives you some good places to start.

2002 malibu runs hot.

Sounds like you have a faulty head gasket or maybe a cracked head. This can cause overheating and the check engine light to come on.The code for the o2 sensor is probably caused by coolant getting into the exhaust system and coating the sensor. The coolant fan may work but it cannot remove enough heat from the rad to make the engine cool off.Try some engine coolant stop leak to see if it will help. This maybe only a temperary fix.Let me know if you need more.MOE

Flashing Red Temp light

This means your car is running too hot. After it cools down check the coolant level and top off as necessary, a 50/50 mix of water and coolant/antifreeze should be fine.

If it it blinks again it is one of two thing, the coolant level is low or the coolant temperature is too high, too high could be an improper water to coolant ratio, i.e. too much water.

Best of luck!
