This is a common problem in high mileage integras. Synchros wear out . U can have transmission rebuilt for over $400 or live with it if car does not merit the expense.

Can a transmission malfunction if overfilled with transmission fluid?

How Does Overfilling Cause Problems? If you overfill the transmission, you will find that the fluid may foam, and that can lead to erratic gear shifting. Other problems can include transmission damage and oil starvation.

1997 feels like it is in second and then after 10 minutes kicks into third

Sounds like sluggish movment inside the transmission. I would recommend a transmission flush and refill, depending on the severity of the amount of sludge you may have to repeat.

How many times does a transmission supposed to shift starting from drive in a 1988 dodge ram with a 318 motor

Depends if you have a regular 3 speed automatic, or a 3 speed with overdrive.
Put it in drive, it will start out in first gear, then shift into second at about 15 MPH, into third at about 30-35 MPH. With overdrive, fourth gear will kick in at about 45-55MPH.

I have 1988 old bravada and it will kick out third

Hello sounds like your torque converter is stuck in lock position have you 1.Checked your transmission fluid,do so by pulling the dip stick if the fluid is brown with odor it is likely your torque converter it is between your motor and bell housing of the transmission,However my solution is to take it in for further observation and diagnostics this is a big job eleven for a mechanic with the rite tools and hoist transmission specialist is the way to go they usually are the better way to go these guys do nothing but drive train.

Transmission promblem

Assuming you have an automatic transmission, I would check the transmission fluid level. If low, you need to identify where the fluid is leaking. Probable locations are transmission pan, or the cooler lines to the radiator.
If this has only begun to happen your transmission will probably be ok. If it has been happening for a while then you will probably be looking for a new transmission.
There is also one other possibility. If the check engine light is on and the codes read something in the area of "transmission control solenoid" or "shift solenoid" then you will need to have those replaced.

Volvo 240 GL Transmission

You have an overdrive relay issue. The tansmission is really a four-speed box, but the OD selector either locks our fourth gear or allows the car to shift normally into fourth. I use the OD on my volvo all the time, because the revs drop in half when the OD is activated, The relay is located behind the glove box, toward the center console. $10 buck on Ebay and your transmission should shift correctly again. I would try that BEFORE more expensive fixes, like OD solenoid $200 or transmission control module. Just for kicks a picked up a spare ECU on Ebay for $10 because these get costly if and when they go. Easy fix, though, a couple of plugs.
