Question about 1992 Pontiac Grand Am

1 Answer

1994 Pontiac Grand Am Quad SOHC 2.3

I have a problem with my car that noone can figure out. After spending almost $500 on the process of elimination, I can't afford that any more. The motor was rebuilt last year, including new radiator, fan, water pump, thermostat, battery, alternator, starter. I gave my cousin a jump start 2 times in a row and when I got back in the car the 2nd time, the check engine light was on. It ran ok, and the light was off the next time I started it. I came on a few more times and I had a diagnostic done that showed Code 19 (crankshaft sensor). Had it replaced, light came back on with same code, even after disconnected the battery, pulling the fuse, and resetting it with the diagnostic machine. Went to second mechanic who checked the sensor and said it was replaced, the wires were fine, checked everything he could think of and couldn't find anything, told me to ignore the light, and charged $300. I replaced the air filter, 2 vacuum hoses, air filter, and bought a new gas cap specifically for my grand am. STILL acts up. It was cutting out when it was idling (in park) and the light would come on. Now the light comes on every time I stop and it surges. I thought I would have a good dependable car that was paid off, boy was I wrong. Please help!

Does it run bad on acceleration? hesitate? Misfire? If so, remove the silver thing that looks like a valve cover. Take it to a Pontiac dealer & have the parts guy sell you the spark plug boots and the spider-web-looking thingy attatched to the underside of the aluminum. Methinks that you have the most common of Grand Am problems: Coils and spark distribution.

I have a 94 Pontiac Grand Am SE 5 speed standard with the 2.3L SOHC Quad 4-138 4 cyl engine. It idles fine; but when you go and shift the car bucks and has little power. Better be going 30 mph before...

This sounds like it may be misfiring, the quad four engine is famous for misfiring theres a coil cover under the top plate where the sparkplugs go, if you remove the 4 bolts and pull it up you will see the sparkplugs and that cover will contain coils and coil cover and boots, i would replace the sparkplugs and the coil cover and sparkplug boots, heres some pictures of the parts, this is where i would start it a tune up, and also check air filter and replace fuel filter,johnjohn2_31.jpgjohnjohn2_32.jpg

Where are the spark plug wires located on a 1995 grand am quad 4? Also, how do you access the plugs?

The Quad 4 does not have plug wires. The engine cover plate has 4 bolts. remove them and lift straight up on the cover. the sparkplug boots will come up with the cover plate. They are protruding strait down from the coils(4) and the plugs are down in the valley between the cam towers if you have the DOHC or behind the cam tower if you have the SOHC.

the timing chain is not correctly installed. you never just crank it over. After you install it, turn it by hand without the spark plugs in..... 2 revolutions and check the timing marks are where they should be. if you feel anything hit or it stops turning back off and figure out why, do not force it. it should turn easy.

Car will turn over but will not start unless gas is fully applied

check for massive vacuum leak at intake and also check timing ...compression test alone does not eliminate timing as suspect
