Question about 1996 Geo Prizm

Cranks sometime I have a 1996 Prizm Lsi. it was doing good until lately. now sometimes it wont start and just make a click sound. when i try later it starts up several time then i wont start again. seems like itt got a mind of its own lol

You have burnt/pitted contacts in the starter solenoid, very common on Nippondenso starters, which the Geo uses. If you can get just the contacts rebuild it, otherwise replace the solenoid and or the starter, if you have really high miles it is better to replace the whole starter with a rebuilt unit from any quality rebuilder, Delco is a real good one, The best price I found was at, $72.00 for a Delco rebuilt unit.   • sure it won't crank the engine , starter motor just clicks !
  • try using jumper cables, and crank, off a running car.?
  • Fuses all good.? test them?
  • battery terminals clean, never green?

Turns over but will not crank, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes isn't crank for days. Lately usually onlycrankswhen it above 70degrees, sometimes it smells like its flooded. We rep

-Take a look at the battery CCA (Cold crank amperage). Sounds like
it's low amp.
-If it click but not start or turn that mean the starter has dirty contact or bad connector between battery and starter.

Check your battery connections at the starter. It may not be getting the needed volts. Just make sure they're clean and tight at the starter and the battery both. Good luck!

you might have a bad connection on the battery, make sure there clean on both sides of terminals. the random code might be from this, check to see if the cable is tight on the starter and check the ground cable as well

Chevy prizm is hard to start and when intially giving it gas is sputters and stalls sometimes. also seems low in power.

Check the fuel filter. It should be changed at regular intervals. Otherwise it can get clogged.

So it does turn over but want start right? Is it turning over slower but want start? Or is it turning over the same speed...Need more information.. Try this....The next time it want start...Loosen the gas cap...Sound crazy? The car might be vapor locked...It's when your gas tanks pressure becomes greater than your gas pump..Worth a try....So the car cranks up runs good until it shuts off...Well it's not a fuse..or the on board computer...Because it would never start back...It's not a ground...Nothing would work..It wouldn't turn over at all..It could be a fuse link...There little tiny wires that act as a fuse... Sometimes you can move the wires and it will start..When it want start also check to see if your getting fire..Bad electronic ignition not sending enough spark...Of course it could be the ignition switch itself..Hope this helps...Something for you to check

The engine cranks, gets fuel, but no spark. engine check light fault code says to check the crankshaft position sensor. where is the sensor located on '97 prism lsi 1.6?

Sounds about right, the sensor is normally towards the back of the engine maybe by or under the oil filter (i'm not familiar with your car but the system is the same on most) normally held in place with 1 10mm spanner size bolt, it will probably have 2 very thin wires plugged into it. to remove it just disconnect the wiring plug and undo the bolt, then pull the sensor out. problems that happen with them is that they get carboned up on the end and sometimes cleaning them off and refitting cures the problem, if it doesnt then is "go buy a new one". It really isnt a hard job to once you find its location, other symptoms include the engine will start and run fine 9 times out of 10 then it just wont run at all. I hope this helps you as problems with the EMU which is the next step can be expensive.

Occassionally wont start in the morning when cold. Will crank over, has done this twice in the last two weeks, it sounds like the fuel pump is kicking on. when it does start (hours later) it runs fine

My guess is that you need to buy a new battery. Hear that clicking sound? That's your solenoid telling you it's not getting the juice it needs to turn over the engine. The dash and dome lights might work but there's not enough amps to start. It's only going to get worse. It's very easy to install a new battery yourself. Make sure the terminal and cables are in good shape. You shold also clean the battery area with a mixture of baking soda and water to neturalize the acid.

turns over and crank are the same thing,
so you are saying it does crank over but no start,right?
you need to determine if you have at least 50psi of fuel pressure in fuel rail at reed valve.
