Hey

before i start....it is def not the alternator. the only job a alternator has it a car is to charge the battery when the engine is started it generates power for lights etc!!! by not starting does the engin turn atal? if the engin does not turn i would check the starter motor!! if the engine is turning i would check to see if there is a spark!! take a plug lead of and put a spark plug into it and turn the engine!! if there is no spark..then the distributor is gone!! if there is a spark them check your fuel pump!! disconnect fuel pipe and turn engine and if no fuel comes out it gone either!

hope iv helped you

What are you missing?
What testing did your friends do?

If you solved the fuel system issues
you still got ignition and air intake
system,as well as a long list of electrical
components.

Need a schematic and start testing

It snowed, went out to start the car, it started then stalled it wouldnt start back up. I replaced the battery, all it does is turn over but wont start. Any idea what it could be. Thanks Al

listen for fuel pump to run when key is first turned on.also check for timing belt to make sure cam is turning. sometimes this can be checked thru oil filler cap while cranking engine.

Hi:
With your battery installed, turn on your head lights and see if they light up. If so, you most likely have a bad ignition switch.(not the key lock, but the actual switch )
It isn't a terribly expensive part, but will cause weird stuff if it fails.

97 Tarus wont start

recheck spark by putting a plug into one of the plug wires and place on valve cover, crank engine and see saprk in that plug. check fuel pressure during cranking to verify fuel supply. If you have no fuel pressure check fuses and fuel pump relay, in fuse box and power distribution box under the hood. If all are good check for power at the fuel pump connector with the key in start position, in run position the power will only be there for about 5 seconds, you are correct with fuel and spark it should run, let me know what you find
