I have a 1997 GMC Jimmy I am trying to rebuild the rear differential. I need to know how to find what spline I need there is 26, 28, and 30 spline listed. The rebuild kit that I find online is that all I need to buy? I have never had to deal with this before and want to get what I need to get it back up and running.

The splines are on the inboard end of your axles. These need to match the "spider" gears as they are splined also.
Normally, a rebuild consists of all new bearings, but if you are replacing the spider gears also, just keep the same spline number of what's in it.
Note, replacing carrier bearing, watch closely for the shims, and keep them where they were. Also, mark your carrier bearing caps as to wher they were. And finally, if you do the pinion bearings, you need to set pre-load, and back lash!!!

Can I swap a 1997 4x4 gmc front differential to a 1995 4x4 gmc

if it is the same bolt pattern in a banjo housing
(fit in from the drive shaft end not salisbury type-- remove cover and pull crown wheel out from the rear) it will fit
items to consider are axle spline size and numbers and diff ratios
if the ratios are not the same , the swap will cause very early drive line failures

I have a 2000 gmc jimmy and its 4x4. whens its in 2 wheel drive theres a loud grinding noise from the rear end and it wont go. i put it in 4wd and the noise stops and i am able to move. what could be the...

sounds like your rear differential has some internals gone or going bad if it wont move at all in two wheel drive then its probably gone sorry. the planetary and spider gears need replacement or the splines on the rear axles are sheared off take you diff cover off( be ready for about half a gallon of gear oil to spill out.) look real good at the axle shafts and gears try to move stuff around. if there is excessive play that could be your problem. hope this helps

Where do you add the rear end fluid to a 2001 gmc Jimmy

On the Differential look at the rear of the Differential near the top and you will see a plug. You remove the plug and check the level by putting your finger into the hole. If the fluid touches the bottom of your finger it is at the proper level. If not, add fluid until it does.

I have 96 chevy silverado extended cab with a vibrationfrom the differential. I found a 2000 gmc Envoy rear end 5 lug. will this bolt up?

Most vibrations are driveshaft being bent, worn u-joint,in need of balance, shocks, wheels, tires and more.I will bet ,swapping the complete rear axle will not change a thing. If it is lifted, you should know your in for problems. If not, and all else fails, strip the rear housing and go through it. The one you swap, may be more worn than yours and not even a good core to rebuild.
