Re: 1998 Nisan Maxima
Your issue may be the switch inside the drivers door handle, where the security switch is located. It's mounted to the back of the lock cylinder inside the door. It most likely fell off the lock and it is stuck in ARMED position, not allowing the car to start. Remove door panel and look at the lock on the back and check it. The alarm switch is a small white plastic piece right at the back of the lock and it has wires coming out of it. Check it and let me know what you have found.

Connie, you can't disable the security system because it is wired to other controllers like the engine controller and disabling it will cause the engine not to start and run. Go to my auto-repair-website below, click on 'Contact Us" and tell me exactly what is happening that the security system must be disabled. Don't worry the website and the help is free. Go Here: http://www.bigasautorepair.com/
the maxima engine has been identified as an intereference engine and valve damage is most likely to occur ( autodata timing belts publication)
timing is unlikely to jump unless the belt breaks or the belt tensioner becomes loose
if there is a timing problem then the engine will be difficult to start , or run very badly
If the motor starts and runs but lacks power or performance or just does not start then it is suggested to have the fault codes read to check for cam/crank position sensors and immobiliser operation
First try another key if you have one.
If that doesn't work then remove the negative wire, wait a few minutes, reconnect and try.
If that doesn't work then you might have broken cable to the ignition switch.
you can get a replacement remote on Ebay for 20-30 bucks, used but they should work. Or go get one at the nissan dealer, if you start disabling the security system you will run into all kinds of things not working or not working right, And ur security system should automatically work with ur key. Go chk it out on You Tube,
If you are getting a starting disabled message, it's an indication that your security system is rejecting your ignition key. Your car is equipped with the VATS security system which requires a key with a resistor attached (small chip). Over time the sensor inside the cylinder will not recognize the key. Usually a new key will fix the problem. In more serious cases, it's the cylinder itself that's bad and needs replacement.
The only way to remove a factory security system is to remove the entire car and buy another one. The security system is an integral part of the engine management system. If you disable it, you will not be able to start your engine.
It is most likely a problem with a sensor in the steering column near the ignition switch. Remove the column cover find the yellow wire and a orange/black wire and cut them. On the body side (not the sensor side) of the cut wires connect the Yellow and orange/black wire with a 2200 ohm resistor between them. This disables the anti-theft system but allows the vehicle to start and run with out it.
Passlock is a passive theft-deterrent system. The system is armed once the key is removed from the ignition. Passlock enables fuel if the ignition lock cylinder is turned with a valid key. If a correct key is not used, fuel is disabled. You may also want to check the fuse or circuit breaker, and see your Oldsmobile retailer for serviceif you get it started. You can disable the security! if you like. take off the cover to the steering column. look on the passengers side of the column and you will see 3 small 20 gauge wires, yellow, white, and black. cut the yellow wire. problem solved! security is now disabled. your security light on the dash will stay on all the time now when running but isnt that better than paying hunderds of dollars for maybe nothing? I know this works cause i had to do it on my 97 achieva. Good luck
