Question about 1997 Nissan Quest

2 Answers

Won't start I'm having trouble w/ my 97 Nissan Quest GXE. It was running fine. I drove to my Mom's about 1 mile from my house, got back in the van to leave, it would not crank. It acts like it's not getting gas. It never turns over. My mechanic friend looked at it, said I needed an "ignition coil". Ordered it, it came today and put it on, still, nothing. I pd. $87.00 for nothing. Please reply. Any advice?

How much $$$$$ does that usually cost? I'm totally mechanically illiterate. Thank u very much!!!!

  • jruth1972 Aug 20, 2008

We did try and jump-start it. There was no change. It acts just like it's out of gas. But it's not. He also made sure the fuel line wasn't clogged. (gas shot out of the line) He said the ign. coil because there was nothing when he checked it. He said it had no "juice". I'll try what you said. It will prob. be tomrrow. I'll let you know what happens. Thank you VERY much for helping. I really appreciate it!!!

That's what I'll do. Would have never known that without your help! I'll let you know if that works. Bless You!!!!

Okay, I went to several auto parts and none had the "crankshaft positioning sensor" in stock. They told me to go to the Nissan place and get them to order it. Went there & was told the 97 Nissan Quest dosen't have a "crankshaft positioning sensor", they said it was a "magnetic sensor". It took the place of the Crankshaft positioning sensor. Is this right? Do you agree? I really don't want to order this part if it's not right. (It cost $60.00) What to do???

  • jruth1972 Aug 22, 2008

Well, they were not sure. They didn't want to tell me wrong. But, if you say that's the same thing, I'll order it. Another thing I forgot and was wondering if this is tied into all this sensor stuff... My temp. guage started "freakin' out" a few months ago. The minute I would crank my van, it started going up & down (shaking) real fast the whole time I'm driving. Is that connected to all this? Was that my warning? LOL...

  • jruth1972 Aug 22, 2008

Yeah, I couldn't agree more. I guess since I wasn't spending $30,000.00 they could care less... You on the other hand, have been VERY helpful. Monday the part should be here. Thank you so much!

  • jruth1972 Aug 27, 2008

Hi. I got the "magnetic pos. sensor". Now, how hard is this to install? My husband or dad will try to do it if it's not much to it. Or should I get it towed to the shop? It won't even attempt to crank now. A few days ago, at least it would try to crank. I tried to find an on-line diagram or manual, but came up with nothing for a 97 Quest.

  • jruth1972 Aug 27, 2008

He dosen't even know what vicinity to look. If he can find it, he can prob. change it out. Do you know where it's located (under the hood)?

  • jruth1972 Aug 27, 2008

Okay. When they get off work this evening, they'll give it a try. Many thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • jruth1972 Sep 09, 2008

Hi again. Got my van back from the shop a few days ago. I ended up having to tow it because they couldn't figure out where mag. sensor went. So, they put a timing chain/belt and new distributor and the mag. sensor. I just noticed this morning the horn still dosen't work. What is that?!!!! I did have to set my clock to the correct time when I got the van back. Do you think it's the fuse making the horn not work? And, if so, where is the fuse? And how do I reset it? I freakin' HATE this van. It has been nothing but money.

  • jruth1972 Sep 09, 2008

    so, is it a fuse?

  • jruth1972 Sep 09, 2008

    will check it out. thanks!

  • jruth1972 Sep 09, 2008

    okay. thanks so much

    there should be a fuse for the horn on the driveers side under the dash;

  • Ronnie Houston Sep 09, 2008

it could be a fuse....they may have accidentally unhooked the horn in the shop when they worked on it...its hard to tell

You may have sucked water into the engine. Take the spark plugs out and try turning the engine over.

I have a 2000 Nissan Quest and I drove it 356 miles in one no issue car when I got to my son's house when to the store and I die no noise no aparent problem it started right up went for 5 min and die again...

not sure about your issue, I thought it was something similar to my own which I just found it to be the crank sensor, rotor and cap. I just changed my fuel filter, not a expert but that could be a issue and very easy to change. By the way how much did a shop charge to change things for you. Trying to get a estimate now and not sure if it is a high /low price

try wiggling the shifter or putting it into neutral, if it starts when doing either of those 2 things then the manual lever sensor on the transmission may be at fault.
