Question about Pontiac Grand Am

My son has a 1998 Pontiac Grand Am Gt with a 3.1 liter engine and automatic transmission and 95,000 miles. When stopping for gasoline last, the car would not shift out of park. We tried wiggling the keys, steering wheel, putting foot on the brake pedal and no results. It blows a 20 amp fuse located in a fuse box under the hood, drivers side. In this fuse box, there are large fuses towards the front and smaller fuses near the rear of the box towards the firewall. The last row nearest the firewall contains three yellow 20 amp fuses. It blows the middle one of these three. The engine starts fine , but will not shift out of park. I noticed that when driving the car for a hour trip that the key feels warm when you remove it from the car.

    I had a car with this problem.



    I solved my problem by removing the cover to the transmission shifter and neutralizing the apparatus preventing the shift.

    blows fuse to the parking lights /problem is between swetch & under hood plug/eng side of firewall

Automatics have a dipstick on the passenger side under the hood. Add ATF with a funnel, engine idling and transmission in park. Standard shift has an oil level plug on the side of the transmission.

Where to find transmision dip stick


there is no dipstick, you can access the transaxle by lifting the car up. It is located on the drivers side right by the wheel. Remove the bolt at the top of the pan, if the fluid dribbles out there is enough, if not you need to fill it.

How many quarts of transmission fluid does it hold


You didn't state what size engine you have.
The 2.2 engine----- 6.9 qts.
The 2.3 engine-----7.4 qts.
The 2.4 is 7.4 qts.
The 3.1 is 7.4 qts.
The 3.4 is 6.9 qts.
These are the capacities for refilling after being drained.

Hate to say it but not very likely. Mine cost me $1500 for a rebuilt. Doesn't hurt to check a few local shops that deal with transmissions.

First, I'd replace the fuse. If it blows again, you have a short in that system.
As for the key, I'm at a loss having now idea how warm it is, whether your running the heating or not or the like. But, if it's substantially warm, it could be a short or bad ground in the ignition switch causing it to heat up. Any corrosion on the ignition connector will cause resistance and therefore heat up or possibly a fire in the column.
The sifting issue could be cause by the brake sensing switch located at the top of the brake pedal. When pressed, it sends a signal to the shift lock solenoid to unlock and allowing shifting out of park. The solenoid itself could also be at fault.
