Question about 2001 Ford Focus

Runs rough once it warms up

2001 focus with the ztec engine. Seems to run ok until it gets warmed up then it begins to stutter almost like it is cutting out. The speedometer will jump around while it is doing this sometimes.

It has 140,000 miles. The engine check light has been on for probably 30,000 miles. I had that checked and they said it was the oxygen sensor if I remember right. It has probably been 25,000 miles since the last tuneup.

I am having a similar problem. (2001 Focus\Zetec\5spd\68k) It's an intermittent problem. It buckets usually at higher speeds and heavy acceleration. Sometimes in lower gears at takeoff, but anytime I accelerate hard it happens and at the same time the speedometer jumpes up 10 20 30 mph+. It always idles fine, but as soon as I step on the gas its jerky like if I was pumping the clutch. In between jumps it usually has plenty of power and most of the time I can go pretty smooth when barely touching the accelerator. Checked out some of the basic components that might be responsible, although I am not a mechanic and don't really know what to do. The engine looks very clean and well maintained. I'm hoping it's something simple. What I've done: -Checked spark plugs, they are clean and seem okay

-Used water remover for fuel tank and injector cleaner, no change

-AdvancedAP has checked for any codes and there were 0. No lights are on the dashboard

    Any help appreciated

How many miles does the motor have on it, does an engine light come on at any point (before, during, or after), and how long has it been since you have had a tune up?

With having that many miles and the light being on with a code of O2 sensor, I'd say start there. Make sure which O2 sensor it is first, pre or post convertor. It's getting close to another tune up, but check your plugs first.

Sounds like it's going to die until it warms up...

Katrina, the fact that your car runs (like a beauty) when shes warmed up, indicates a fuel air mixture problem when cold. Your car is equipt with electronic fuel injection. This system utilizes a series of sensors that detect conditions such as engine temp, outside temp, humidity and air pressure to determine what mixture is perfect for the prevailing condition. For example, on a cold start, the sensors should know that the engine is not up to the proper operating temperature and provide more fuel and less air, (a richer mixture), until the engine warms, this emulates a choke on a vehicle equipt with a carburator. The problem either lies in the sensor itself, or the brain that interprets these inputs to decide what fuel/air mixture to deliver.

Rough Idel & Engine Miss

You may have water in the spark plug hole, or a shorted plug wire, pull #4 wire and look for water residue and a possible burn mark on the plug wire were it goes over the plug.
