I have a 1998 Ford F150. The transmission is a 4r70W, automatic. While driving it slipped into neutral and when I managed to get the gears to re-engage, it will only drive in the lower gears. Will not shift into the higher gears. Max speed about 30 MPH. Someone suggested it was the TPS switch but someone else suggested the torch convertor.

the pickup F150 or econoline van, or what.
the PIckup had 5 engines choices in 2002. (to sizes and fuel types()
v6 and v8, the V8 I my guess wild and will use only ITS trans as a topic. 5.4L gas. only
2wd or 4 wheel drive ,yes different box.
2wd = Stamped #1C3P7000B (on the box)
1C3Z-7V000-BRM
7000- base model or 2003-2008 4R75E & 4R75W
deeper the wiki said, 4R70W used in all applications:F150 too.
what s 70w mean not 70E. ( W = NEW GEAR RATIOS)
AND the 5.4L V8, a stronger gearset is used than in normal duty 4R70W AND HAS A UNIQUE MODEL TOLD ABOVE 7000 CODE.
IT IS ELECTRONIC SHIFTED SAME AS 4R70E.
YOUR BOX IS RATED FOR 700 N-m. OF TORQUE FOR BIG V8 ABOVE MY WILD GUESS ENGINE,
NOW WHAT TO DO:
the transmission needs service if all fuses are good.
and if savvy learn to scan the PCM (USA ? obd2.) yet. it has transm. codes. p07xx and more.
I guess you mean TRANSMISSION illegalll FLARE or as some say false Neutrals.SURE AND IS A CLASSIC FAILURE ENDLESS.


the factory service manual covers this, RTM? got one./LOST IT?
the Trans is electronically shifted, no engine told nor trans model told. the trans on cars are matched to sized engine, 5.4l V8 GUESS1.

besides not you scanning the PCM first, the manual page chapter transmissions tells you to test, line out pressure from the trans-main pump.
ports (plug out)
when pressure drops illegallly low the Clutch back servos go dead.
this makes vast transmissions dead, and the cure is obvious.
if true. that.
rebuilt trans time..

if the scans show a dead solenoid valve in the trans that too needs attention.
the 3 tests are
1: fuses good
2: scan errors OBD2 DTC codes not seen for trans or yes.
3: main pump test port, checked.

scan it. first. no tech can diagnose any car lacking a scanner.
unless some simple loose part or oil leak. etc.
EFI and TRANS must be scanned, when sick , MUST BE

Could be valve body problems, shift solenoid or the TCM. If all check out good then I'd overhaul the transmission.

Hi There,

It should be either a 4R70w or E4OD, check the trans code on the drivers door decal and compare it to this list.

Transmission codes from 1995 Manual M = manual 5 speed overdrive (Mazda?) E = Automatic E40D G = C6 auto U = 4R70W (4spd auto with overdrive) C = manual 5 speed close ratio (Z-F) W = 5 speed H.D. Overdrive Transmission codes start with "TR" then are followed by one of the letters above.

It can be issue with gears or problem with transmission and needs to be rebuilt. Also get the ****** fluid checked. If it's low, then such problems occurs.

To troubleshoot these types of issues, check the actual solved problems with these types of issues.

The shifter needs to be inspected. If The shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.

There are many other possibilities.

whether it is the smaller (4R70w) or the bigger (E4OD), the solenoids are under the pan. The E4OD solenoids are in one big block where the other trans has them seperated

I have that exact same truck and transmission and My Transmission did the exact same thing about a year ago and there was some kind of snap ring inside the transmission that broke. I originally thought it had to be an electirical problem because the truck shifted fine until OD or if i turned OD off. The 4r70w is a light transmission and i would suggest you have a shift kit put in and they make a heavier kit to beef it up.. Sorry its probably not the new you were looking for.

I believe we call that a planetary gear, found in the rear of the transmission. Its gone.
